Dehradun: Surendra Koli, former accused in the famous Nithari case that shocked the country, has committed suicide by hanging himself. Surendra Koli was originally a resident of Mangrukhal village located in Bhikiyasain of Almora district of Uttarakhand. After this unexpected incident in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, there was panic in the police-administration and the local area. He was found hanging in a tea stall in front of Lalmata temple on Sapt Sarovar Road in Bhupatwala, northern area of Haridwar. As soon as the information was received, the team of Kotwali police and Sapt Rishi police post reached the spot and started investigation.

For the last few months, he was living and earning his living in Haridwar. In the initial investigation by the police and local inquiry, family discord is being considered as the main reason behind this suicidal step.
Police officials say that the incident site has been closely inspected to find out the real reason for the suicide and the people nearby are also being thoroughly interrogated.
Horrible history of Nithari incident
This dreadful case of Nithari incident came to light in December 2006, when skeletons and remains of several innocent children were recovered from the drain behind the infamous D-5 Kothi in Sector 31, Noida. This sensational revelation shook the entire nation. At that time the police had arrested the owner of the house Manendra Singh Pandher and his servant Surendra Koli. A total of 16 serious cases related to murder, rape and inhuman acts were registered against Koli, in which he was awarded death sentence from the lower courts.
The journey of court decisions and acquittal
There were many twists and turns in this legal battle. After the case came to light in 2006, Allahabad High Court had sentenced Surendra Koli to death, which was later changed to life imprisonment in 2015. After a long legal process, on 11 November 2025, the Supreme Court released Surendra Koli, declaring him innocent on all counts. It is noteworthy that the main accused in this case, Manendra Singh Pandher, had already been acquitted by the court in all the cases. The death of Koli, who was leading a quiet life after his release, has once again refreshed the old wounds and that dark chapter.
