Lungi Ngidi Ruled Out of Australia Series Due to Hamstring Injury

The South African pacer Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the upcoming ODI series against Australia due to a hamstring injury.

The 30-year-old experienced discomfort during a domestic first-class game. He will undergo scans. He will undergo a period of rehabilitation.

The injury has put South Africa in a tough spot after Kagiso Rabada and Ottneil Baartman have been ruled out due to injuries.

In the absence of the trio, Marco Jansen will be leading the pace attack in the South Africa squad, which also features Gerald Coetzee, Corbin Bosch, Kwena Maphaka, Duan Jansen and the new addition Nqobani Mokoena.

“Lungi Ngidi has been ruled out of the three-match Dafabet ODI series against Australia with a right hamstring injury,” CSA wrote on social media.

His availability for the upcoming ICC WTC series against Australia will be determined ahead of the series, which begins on October 09.

“His availability for the subsequent Test series will be assessed closer to the start of the series,” said the board.

Meanwhile, Nqobani Mokoena has been named as a replacement. Mokoena made his ODI debut during the recent series against Namibia, featuring in two matches and claiming one wicket.

Mokoena represents the Dolphins in their first-class match against Western Province, where he bowled 19 overs on the opening day and returned figures of 1/78. However, he has withdrawn from the Dolphins to join the South Africa squad.

The three-match ODI series will kick off on September 24 at Kingsmead, while the second and third matches will be played on September 27 and 30 at Johannesburg and Potchefstroom.
