A big stir has started in the corridors of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) regarding the leadership of the Senior Men's Selection Committee. The tenure of current chief selector Ajit Agarkar is going to end in October 2026 and according to reports, he is not interested in taking extension in his post. Agarkar took many tough and far-reaching decisions in the selection of the Indian cricket team, including the selection of the ODI and T20 teams for the recent West Indies tour. Now when the news of his leaving the post seems to be getting confirmed, the name of former Indian wicketkeeper batsman Parthiv Patel has emerged as the strongest contender as the next Chief Selector. If internal sources of the board are to be believed, the process of reconstitution of the selection committee will soon be taken forward with formal advertisement and interviews.
The speculations about major changes in the Indian selection committee got the maximum impetus when Ajit Agarkar was completely absent from an important review meeting held at the BCCI headquarters recently. Almost all the key stakeholders of Indian cricket were present in this high-level meeting, including Team India head coach Gautam Gambhir who had specially traveled from Delhi to reach Mumbai. Apart from him, prominent faces like National Cricket Academy (NCA) chief VVS Laxman, star batsman Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Mithun Manhas were present in person. Despite the presence of the greats of the Indian cricket world under one roof, the non-contact of the Chairman of the Senior Selection Committee either directly or through video conferencing became a very shocking matter for the cricket experts.
Speaking to The Times of India, a top BCCI source confirmed that Agarkar's absence from the important strategic meeting was not a routine administrative incident. The source said that it is generally rare that the entire think tank of Indian cricket, the head coach and senior players are present together in one room and the head of the selection committee is absent there. According to inside sources, Ajit Agarkar himself has decided not to extend his tenure and has also informally informed the top officials of the Board of Control for Cricket in India in this regard. Agarkar took over as Chief Selector after the resignation of Chetan Sharma in July 2023 and his three-year tenure is ending in October 2026.
The name of 41-year-old former wicketkeeper batsman Parthiv Patel is at the forefront as a possible successor to Ajit Agarkar. Hailing from Gujarat, Parthiv Patel has long and wide experience in international and domestic cricket. He has played 25 Test matches, 38 ODIs and 2 T20 Internationals for the Indian national team. He scored 934 runs in 38 innings of Test cricket, recorded 736 runs in 34 innings of ODI and scored 36 runs in 2 T20 innings. Parthiv, who made his debut in international cricket at the age of 17, played his last match in the year 2018. After his international retirement, he has been associated with the IPL franchise as a talent scout and mentor, due to which he has a deep understanding of the domestic young talent and this ability makes him the most suitable candidate for the post of head of the selection committee.
According to the rules of the BCCI constitution, it is mandatory to follow a set legal procedure for the appointment of any new selector or chief selector. The Board will soon invite formal applications for the post, after which the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC) will shortlist the applications and interview eligible candidates. Although Agarkar's tenure ends in October, it may take a few weeks for the formation of a new selection committee and the official announcement of the new chairman. If Parthiv Patel's candidature is approved, we could see a young and modern-minded selection committee for the upcoming ICC tournaments and Test Championship cycle.
