18 days before the by-election in West Bengal, Mamata group’s woman candidate Sanchita Pradhan Dey withdrew her candidature from the Nandigram seat on Friday. Sanchita had earlier met Bengal Chief Minister Shubhendu. After which Mamata talked about supporting Congress candidate Milan Pradhan Mamata Banerjee in Nandigram. However, after 2 hours Bengal Police arrested him in an old case. Nandigram seat was vacated by Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari. The Reginagar seat fell vacant after the resignation of Humayun Kabir. Both the seats will go to polls on October 6, the results will be out on October 9.
Nandigram is an important seat for both TMC and BJP
Nandigram has long been a hotbed of political conflict between the TMC and the BJP. The 2007 agitation in the area played a major role in bringing Mamata Banerjee and the TMC to power in 2011. In 2021, Mamata Banerjee contested the election from here against the current Chief Minister of Bengal Shubhendu Adhikari and lost. After joining the BJP, the officer has become the TMC’s biggest opponent. In the 2026 elections, Shubhendu contested from Nandigram and Bhawanipur and won both. He defeated Mamata Banerjee in Bhawanipur. He then resigned from the Nandigram seat and a by-election will now be held there.
