Mumbai: A second-year student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay died by suicide, triggering protests among students and bringing renewed attention to concerns around academic pressure and student support systems.
The student was enrolled in the Department of Energy Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay. The incident took place at the institute's Powai campus, where students later gathered to raise concerns over the circumstances surrounding the death.
Exam Incident Before Student's Death
According to IIT Bombay, the incident occurred after the student was found using a mobile phone during an examination. The institute said the student had uploaded the question paper on ChatGPT during the exam to seek answers.
The institute stated that no formal disciplinary proceedings were started against the student following the incident. Officials said the matter was discussed with the student by faculty members, who counseled him and assured him that the issue would not affect his academic future.
Later, the student returned to his hostel room, where he was found dead. Authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
