US's 100 percent tariff: US President Donald Trump has signed the Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act. Its purpose is to punish and put pressure on Moscow for the ongoing war against Ukraine. The law also gives Moscow the power to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on Moscow and countries that buy large amounts of its energy, such as China and India.

The White House said, “On Friday, September 18, 2026, the President signed into law HR 5334, the 'Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026.' This legislation imposes and extends legal sanctions, tariffs, and embargoes on Russia, as well as existing sanctions on Iran.” The House of Representatives on Wednesday passed legislation imposing sanctions on Russia and Iran. The law aims to impose sanctions on Russia's leadership and energy sector, as well as Moscow's defense industry and allies involved in its so-called 'shadow fleet'.
The move has been described as the last major achievement by the late Senator Lindsey Graham (Republican-South Carolina), who was a close aide and friend of the President and returned from Ukraine shortly before his sudden death in July. The bill, which was more than a year in the making, received overwhelming bipartisan support: it passed by a vote of 86-11 in the Senate and 262-159 in the House.
Its purpose is to deprive Russian President Vladimir Putin of the resources Moscow needs to continue the war in Ukraine. In this, Trump has also been instructed to impose tariffs up to 100% on the five largest importers of Russian oil or natural gas. However, exemptions are granted to countries that import less than 15% of Russia's natural gas exports and have taken significant steps to reduce these imports.
