IIT Bombay Student Death: Powai Police has registered an FIR and started investigation in the case of suicide of Sahil Wakode, a 20-year-old student of Energy Science Department in the hostel of IIT Bombay. This FIR was registered on 19 September 2026 on the basis of the complaint of Sahil’s father Ravindra Chakradhar Wakode.
In this case, sections 3(1)(r) and 3(1)(s) of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act along with relevant sections of the Indian Judicial Code have also been imposed.
Complaint against officials including faculty teacher
In the FIR, a complaint has been registered against faculty teacher Suryanarayan Dulla, his senior officers and other concerned officials associated with IIT.
Sahil’s father told in his statement to the police that his son had studied till 12th class in Yavatmal. After this, in the year 2024-25, he was selected in the Department of Energy Science in Powai Campus of IIT Bombay. He was studying in the second year and was living in a hostel.
Father made allegations of mental harassment
According to the complaint, Sahil had told his father some time ago that faculty teacher Suryanarayan Dulla was allegedly using caste-related words with him for the last three months.
According to the father, Sahil had also told that he was being harassed because of his caste and was being threatened to be implicated in a false case. After this the family explained to him to remain mentally strong and continue his studies.
Family got information after call from IIT
According to the FIR, at around 8 am on September 18, 2026, Sahil’s mother received a call from IIT Bombay and the family was asked to reach the hostel immediately. After this, Powai police also called the family and informed them about Sahil’s suicide. After this, the family reached Mumbai from Yavatmal on the morning of 19 September and lodged a complaint at Powai Police Station.
Investigation handed over to Mumbai Crime Branch
Sahil’s father has alleged that his son was forced to take this step due to alleged mental harassment by faculty professor Suryanarayan Dulla.
Based on the complaint, the police have registered an FIR and started investigation. The investigation of the case has now been transferred to Mumbai Crime Branch. In the investigation, the police will investigate the veracity of the allegations, the role of the people concerned and the circumstances of Sahil before his suicide.
