The new movie and TV releases coming to HBO Max from September 21-27, 2026, include Backrooms and more.
Directed and co-scored by Kane Parsons, Backrooms is a psychological horror film. It follows Clark, a furniture store owner, and his therapist, Mary. Their lives turn upside down when they come across a dimension of liminal spaces that appears endless through a mysterious door in the store’s basement. The film received positive reviews and emerged as the second-highest-grossing horror film of the year. It features Chiwetel Ejiofor, Renate Reinsve, Mark Duplass, Finn Bennett, Lukita Maxwell, and many others in important roles.
Also coming to HBO Max is the science-action film The Meg. Directed by Jon Turteltaub, it is loosely based on Steve Allen’s 1997 novel Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. It focuses on members of an underwater research facility facing a threat from a prehistoric shark, Megalodon, aka Meg. Thus, they seek the help of a skilled diver named Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) to save their lives. The film opened to mixed reviews and became a box-office success, grossing $529 million worldwide.
