Washington Commanders quarterback Jayden Daniels suffered a dislocated left elbow during the final play of the first half in Sunday’s 37-20 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. The injury occurred as Daniels attempted to avoid a sack with Washington just one yard from the end zone.
Daniels had been a major part of Washington’s offense before the injury, rushing for 69 yards in the first half and completing 11 of 17 passes for 96 yards. He also threw a four-yard touchdown pass to Stefon Diggs.
The injury happened with only three seconds remaining in the opening half. Washington had moved 64 yards on a 15-play drive and decided against taking a field goal, instead attempting another play from the Dallas 1-yard line.

As Daniels moved backward, he was stepped on by Washington left guard Chris Paul. The quarterback lost his balance and reached his left arm toward the turf to prevent himself from falling. His arm buckled under his body weight, with his elbow appearing to bend inward.
Jayden Daniels Injury Update: No Fracture Reported
Commanders coach Dan Quinn confirmed after the game that Daniels dislocated his left elbow. It is the same arm in which Daniels suffered an elbow injury last season against the Seattle Seahawks.
Quinn said initial information indicated there was no fracture, but Daniels will undergo further testing to determine the extent of the injury. The tests will also establish whether there is any ligament damage and whether surgery will be required.
The Commanders are hopeful that Daniels can return at some point this season, although his recovery timeline will depend on the results of the additional examinations.
Marcus Mariota replaced Daniels at quarterback to begin the second half. Mariota completed 11 of 16 passes for 111 yards and a touchdown as Washington continued without its starting quarterback.
Daniels’ injury came during a difficult afternoon for Washington, which ultimately fell 37-20 to Dallas. Before leaving the game, however, the second-year quarterback had provided both a passing and rushing threat, particularly with his ability to create yards against Dallas’ pass rush.
The Commanders will now await the results of Daniels’ further medical evaluation before determining his availability for their upcoming games.
