Malaysian tycoon Jeffrey Cheah’s Sunway Healthcare starts work on $196M Johor hospital

The multi-specialty tertiary hospital, called Sunway Medical Center Iskandar Puteri, is slated for completion in 2030 and will have more than 400 beds and a workforce of over 1,400 healthcare professionals.

The project sits within Sunway Group’s Sunway City Iskandar Puteri, a 2,000-acre township in Johor with around 7,000 residents. The township was launched in 2014 and has seen more than 30% of its area developed and about 2,000 residential units sold.

Lee Ting Han, chairman of the Johor State Investment, Trade, Consumer Affairs and Human Resources Committee, said at the groundbreaking ceremony last Friday that the hospital could attract more investment and talent to the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone, The Edge Malaysia reported.

Cheah, Sunway Group’s founder and chairman, said quality healthcare is crucial to sustain Johor’s growth.

“We look forward to building a trusted medical institution that serves Johor and the wider region for generations to come,” he said, as quoted by The Star.

Sunway Healthcare also plans to expand its presence in Johor with the Sunway Fertility Centre at Sunway Citrine in 2027, the Sunway Ambulatory Care Center near the Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link with Singapore in 2028 and potentially elder-care facilities.

By 2032, it aims to operate eight hospitals across Malaysia with a combined capacity of more than 3,400 beds.

The firm, which debuted on Bursa Malaysia’s Main Market in March, reported net profits of RM111.48 million on revenues of nearly RM1.26 billion for the six months ended June 30, up 39% and 27% respectively from a year ago.

It is a unit of Sunway Group, one of Malaysia’s largest conglomerates with businesses spanning construction, real estate, healthcare, education and infrastructure.

Forbes ranked Cheah as Malaysia’s eighth richest billionaire in late April with an estimated net worth of $5.3 billion.
