The confluence of historical tradition and faith of Ganeshotsav was seen on Sunday at Shrimant Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati Mandal in Pune. Assam Rifles Director General Lieutenant General Vikas Lakheda visited the Mandal and participated in the evening Maha Aarti. After having darshan of the historical Ganpati, he appreciated the Ganeshotsav tradition of Pune and the efforts being made to keep it alive.
After reaching the Mandal, Lieutenant General Lakheda performed formal puja and participated in the Maha Aarti. During this period the atmosphere was devotional. After the Maha Aarti, he was felicitated by the Mandal. Speaking to the media, Lieutenant General Lakheda said that the opportunity to pray in front of the historical Ganpati was very special for him. He said, “The feeling that I have as a devotee, I have the same feeling in my mind. I am an ordinary person and any person gets an opportunity to come to the house of God and pray, then it is an extraordinary opportunity in itself. I am overwhelmed.”
Also prayed for the well being of the citizens
He also prayed for the progress, security and strength of the country and the well-being of all citizens. He said that his wish is that the country should continue to progress, remain safe, and all the people should prosper. Lieutenant General Lakheda also mentioned the historical background of Bhausaheb Rangari Ganapati. He said that this tradition is related to the period when India was under British rule. According to him, it is very important to know this history and pass it on to the next generation.

He said, “When this idol was made, we were under British rule. This was the first public Ganpati; public Ganpati started from here.” He described this history as inspiring for the country and society. Lakheda also appealed to the youth to remain connected to their culture and history. He said that modernity is necessary, but one should not forget one's roots. “Don't forget your culture. Your biggest strength is your culture. Your history will decide your future. Stay connected to your roots,” he said. During the tour, information was given by the Mandal about the efforts made by the Mandal to preserve the tradition of Ganeshotsav of Pune, the history and heritage related to Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati. The Mandal's emphasis is on the fact that Ganeshotsav should not just be a religious event but should also be linked to the cultural identity and history of Pune.
This visit of Lieutenant General Lakheda took place at a time when the whole of Pune is immersed in the enthusiasm of Ganeshotsav. His arrival gave a different feature to the Mandal event. Enthusiasm was also seen among the devotees present during the Maha Aarti. Pune's public Ganeshotsav is identified by its tradition and social involvement. Bhausaheb Rangari Ganpati Mandal is working towards carrying forward this historical legacy. While appreciating these efforts of the division, Lieutenant General Lakheda stressed the importance of passing on this tradition to the coming generations.
