MUMBAI, Sept 22:
The 21-year-old driver of a BMW that crashed off Mumbai’s Coastal Road, killing three people, had earlier faced cases relating to overspeeding and disorderly behaviour while allegedly under the influence of alcohol, police said.
The driver, Shanay Gajar, was also killed in Sunday’s crash. Police have registered an FIR against him under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the Motor Vehicles Act.
According to police, Gajar was booked at Gamdevi police station in March after his BMW allegedly hit another vehicle. A video of the incident has also surfaced on social media.
He was again booked last month at Bandra police station after he and three others allegedly created a disturbance on a public road while in an inebriated state and allegedly misbehaved with police personnel.
The group was booked for allegedly obstructing a public servant under the BNS and under provisions of the Maharashtra Prohibition Act relating to disorderly behaviour and consumption of liquor for intoxication.
In Sunday’s accident, Gajar was allegedly driving at high speed towards Haji Ali when he lost control near Lotus Jetty. The BMW plunged into an ongoing work area at an L&T parking site.
Gajar, Dhairya Darshan Seth, 17, and Aditya Jakasniya, 19, were taken to Nair Hospital, where they were declared dead. Another occupant, Aditya Oswal, 23, suffered severe injuries and remains in critical condition.
The Tardeo police are investigating the circumstances that led to the crash.
