By doing this, the souls of our ancestors become satisfied and happy and bless us to always be happy and prosperous, hence it is absolutely necessary to perform Pitru Tarpan and Shraddha rituals on Ashwin Krishna Paksha with reverence for our ancestors. This brings health, prosperity, longevity, happiness, peace, progeny and good children. It is named 'Shraddha' because it is performed with devotion. It should also be kept in mind that Shraddha rituals are performed in the 'afternoon' day of Vyapini Tithi.
Astrologer Pt. Manoj Kumar Dwivedi has told that during Pitru Paksha, ancestors are remembered and paid tribute to them. Pitra means ancestor, ancestors who are no longer among us, we express our gratitude towards our ancestors by performing Shraddha in Pitru Paksha, this special Paksha dedicated to our ancestors starts from Bhadrapada Purnima and lasts till the new moon day of Ashwin month, this period of 16 days is called Pitru Paksha. Pitru Paksha is also known as Shraddha. This year, Pitru Paksha will start from 26th September with Purnima Shraddha and will end with Pitru Visarjan Amavasya on 10th October.

Astrologer Pandit Manoj Kumar Dwivedi has told that Pitru Paksha has a very deep and scientific connection with astrology, because it is not just a religious tradition but an important astronomical and cosmic event. According to Vedic astrology, when the Sun and the Moon come in a particular angular position, the distance between the Earth and Pitru Loka becomes minimal, allowing the energy of our ancestors to connect directly with us. According to Vedic astrology, when Sun enters Virgo, Pitru Paksha is celebrated during that time.

It has been believed for ages that every person gets 'Gati' on the basis of his deeds. Basically there are three types of speed – upward speed i.e. attaining heaven, downward speed i.e. due to bad deeds a person gets to a lower level than his human form and the third speed is stable speed in which a person gets human life only. Ancestors are related to our birth, values and emotions. Pitra Dosh is considered to be the karmic debt of the ancestors, which becomes the responsibility of the present generation. It is believed that this Dosha appears in a person's horoscope when he/she has committed sins, misdeeds or bad deeds knowingly or unknowingly during his/her lifetime in the previous birth. These sins appear as bad debts in the horoscope of future generations. Shraddha rituals are performed to get relief from the evil effects of Pitra Dosh, which appease the spirits of ancestors.

According to religious texts, people offer water to their ancestors during the sixteen days of Shraddha and perform Shraddha on their death anniversary. It is believed that the debt to ancestors is repaid through Shraddha. In any month and date of the year, Shraddha is performed for the ancestors who passed away on the same date of Pitru Paksha. Karmas performed with devotion for the purpose of satisfying the ancestors, offering food to Brahmins, donations etc. are called Shraddha. It is also called Pitriyagya. Through Shraddha, a person becomes free from the debt of ancestors and by satisfying the ancestors, he moves on the path of self-liberation. Shraddha or Pind Daan are two aspects of the same word. The meaning of the word Pind Daan is to offer food to the ancestors with devotion in the form of a pinda. This is called Pind Daan.

Pitru Paksha is also considered a time to contemplate on the principles of human birth. Hinduism gives high importance to the bond that exists between all living beings. Pitru Paksha is also an opportunity to realize that our life is not limited to the body only. It reminds us of our connection with our loved ones beyond the physical world. According to the scriptures, the soul is eternal and the human body is transitory. Similarly, the emotional connection between the living members and those who have left the body remains constant. Therefore, in Hindu religion people express their love on this occasion by expressing gratitude towards everything they have received from their ancestors. Making this offering during Pitru Paksha is considered the religion of living beings. It is beneficial for both the living and the deceased. Departed beings get help in moving towards higher worlds in their journey of salvation. Another advantage of this is that we come closer to the forces of the universe that are beyond the reach and control of man. Praying to ancestors definitely brings good luck and auspiciousness and brings permanent prosperity, happiness, good health, longevity, contentment and peace in our family life.
