New Delhi: Delhi riots accused Sharjeel Imam has got a big relief from the court and Delhi's Karkardooma court has granted him interim bail to attend his cousin's wedding. The court has granted bail for seven days from October 4 to October 10. Let us tell you that the regular bail plea of Sharjeel Imam is to be heard on September 30. Just before that he has got this interim relief. After this decision of the court, he will be able to come out of jail for a few days.
Sharjeel Imam is in jail since 2020
Sharjeel Imam has been in custody since January 2020. A case has been registered against him under UAPA i.e. Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. It is alleged that he gave inflammatory speeches during anti-CAA protests in 2019 and conspired to cause communal riots in Delhi in February 2020. In this case, he is lodged in Tihar Jail for more than five and a half years.
This is not the first time that he has got bail for marriage. Earlier in March 2025 also, the court had granted him interim bail of 10 days. Then he came out to attend his real brother's wedding and take care of his ailing mother.
The petition was rejected in July
It is noteworthy that in the month of July, Karkardooma Court itself had rejected his regular bail petition. The court had said in its order that due to the instructions of the Supreme Court, it cannot consider bail at this stage.
In fact, the Supreme Court had said in its order on January 5, 2026 that until the testimony of the safe witnesses of the prosecution is completed or one year of this order is not completed, the accused cannot apply for bail again. On this basis the lower court had rejected his petition. Now this interim bail granted before the hearing on regular bail is being seen as a temporary relief for Sharjeel Imam.
