Gen Z's conversation habits
New Delhi: It is a common belief that today's Gen Z generation is so busy with their phones that they avoid face-to-face interactions. But a recent study has challenged this idea. In fact, Gen Z is not running away from conversation, but has changed the way they communicate. A global small talk survey conducted in 2026 by language learning platform Preply included 1,400 participants from the US, UK, Canada and Australia. The results of this survey are quite shocking.
According to the report, 58% of Gen Z members have short face-to-face conversations every day, compared to just 31% of Baby Boomers. This number is 53% among Millennials and 37% among Gen X. Thus, Gen Z is at the forefront in this matter.
Gen Z leads in online conversations
Gen Z is not behind in online communication either. 47% of Gen Z members chat casually online every day, compared to 42% of Millennials, 22% of Gen X, and only 18% of Boomers. 65% of Gen Z said they are interacting more now than in the past 5 years. However, there is another aspect also. Gen Z talks, but doesn't feel the need to engage in every conversation. Over the past year, 87% of Gen Z have tried to avoid live conversation, and 93% have made excuses to avoid small talk.
Gen Z's new way of being social
41% made the excuse of looking at the phone to avoid conversation, while 37% thought it was better to send a direct message or DM instead of calling. Similarly, the same trend was seen in case of phone calls also. 27% of Gen Z intentionally let calls go to voicemail and then message, compared to only 7% of Baby Boomers who do. The topics of conversation have also changed. Baby Boomers still like to talk about the weather, with 56% reporting this. At the same time, only 28% of people in Gen Z discuss the weather. They prefer to talk about weekend plans, restaurants, traveling and social life. Overall, Gen Z has not only become less social, but has changed the way they socialize.
