Jon M. Chu addresses Britney Spears biopic casting rumors

Jon M. Chu has addressed ongoing speculation surrounding Britney Spears’ upcoming biopic, making it clear that no casting decisions have been officially announced yet.

The filmmaker, who is attached to direct the highly anticipated project, recently spoke about the film while attending the opening gala of the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles. During the conversation, Chu offered a brief but intriguing update about Spears and the development of the project.

Chu hinted that Spears has been involved in work related to the biopic, although he stopped short of revealing exactly what she has been doing. He described what he had seen as “incredible,” “profound” and “beautiful,” while suggesting that he could not share further details at this stage.

The director also confirmed that casting is not currently the focus of the project. He explained that he has been receiving hundreds of emails and audition submissions from people around the world who are interested in being part of the film.

However, Chu said the team is currently concentrating on getting Spears’ story right before moving forward with casting.

His comments came amid growing speculation that Spears herself could appear in the film. Fans have been wondering whether the pop star might portray herself in certain parts of the biopic, particularly because of her connection to the project and her involvement in its development.

When asked directly about the possibility of Spears being cast in the movie, Chu did not confirm or deny the reports. Instead, he indicated that details about the cast would remain private for now.

While the filmmaker kept the casting details under wraps, he appeared enthusiastic about Spears’ music and revealed that he has been introducing her songs to his children.

Chu mentioned “…Baby One More Time” as one of the Britney Spears songs he is currently sharing with them. He also highlighted some of Spears’ earlier tracks, including “Soda Pop” and “E-Mail My Heart,” saying he is introducing his children to her music from the beginning of her career.

The comments offer a glimpse into Chu’s appreciation for Spears’ musical legacy as he prepares to bring her personal story to the big screen.

Britney Spears biopic based on memoir

The upcoming biopic will be based on Spears’ bestselling 2023 memoir, The Woman in Me, which chronicles major moments from her childhood, rise to international fame, personal struggles and highly publicised experiences in the entertainment industry.

The screenplay is being written by Meriwether, who was brought on to develop the script in July. The project will be produced by Marc Platt through his deal with Universal Pictures.

Universal Pictures acquired the rights to Spears’ memoir for the planned feature film more than two years ago, generating significant interest among fans worldwide.

Following the announcement, Spears also appeared to tease a “secret project” on social media. She praised Platt and suggested that audiences should stay tuned for what was coming next.

Since then, anticipation surrounding the biopic has continued to grow, particularly over who will portray Spears at different stages of her life.

For now, Chu appears focused on developing the story before making any casting announcements. While fans may have to wait longer for details about the cast, the director’s latest comments suggest that the project is continuing to move forward.
