A double-decker bus going from Delhi's Kashmere Gate to Mahoba in Uttar Pradesh caught fire on Wednesday midnight at the 33rd kilometer of Yamuna Expressway. There were 35 people in the bus. On receiving information about the incident, teams of fire brigade, police and district administration reached the spot and rescued the people. Nine people including a woman burnt to death in the accident. Due to this incident, there was chaos on Yamuna Expressway from midnight till this morning. Police and fire brigade officials cut the bus with gas cutters to remove the trapped bodies.
Additional Police Commissioner (Law and Order) Rajeev Narayan Mishra said that on Wednesday midnight, a double-decker bus carrying 35 passengers had left from Delhi's Kashmere Gate for Mahoba district via Yamuna Expressway. He told that as soon as the bus reached the 33rd kilometer of Yamuna Expressway, it suddenly caught fire. He said that after receiving information about the incident, teams of fire brigade, police and district administration reached the spot. He said that after the rescue operation, about 26 people were taken out, while nine people including a woman died due to burning. Some people became unconscious due to smoke in the bus and were admitted to the hospital for treatment. His condition is now stable.
He told that due to the fire the bus was completely filled with smoke. Some people were sleeping at the time of the incident. He told that many people got trapped in the bus due to sleeping and died due to burning. Additional Commissioner said that the police reached the spot, broke the glass, cut a large part of the bus with a gas cutter and pulled out the people trapped inside. He said that some people have been identified, while some have not been identified yet.
Police are working to identify all the victims and inform their families. Rinki Rajput, a passenger traveling in the bus, said that she had boarded a double-decker bus from Noida and was going to her home in Rath. She was sleeping at the time of the incident. A passenger woke him up by banging on the bus cabin. Then she got out of the bus. He said that there was so much panic among the people that no one picked up their belongings. People were running here and there to save their lives.
Many people's belongings, cash, jewellery, mobile phones etc. were also burnt in the incident. He said that about half an hour after the incident, police and fire brigade vehicles reached the spot. According to Rinki, who was traveling in the bus, more than nine people are feared dead in this incident.
