One of the most important issues facing the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) at this time is the selection of the new Chief Selector. The tenure of current Chief Selector Ajit Agarkar is about to end, after which the Board will have to look for a new chief to take charge of the selection committee.
Sports News: There is going to be a big change in the senior men's selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) soon. Current chief selector Ajit Agarkar will complete his tenure on October 4, 2026. Agarkar has already told the board that he is not interested in extending his three-year term. In such a situation, the process of appointing a new Chief Selector for the Indian cricket team has now become important.
BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia has clarified that the board will decide on the name of the new selection committee chief after Ajit Agarkar's tenure ends. He said that the board has enough time for this process and its official announcement will be made publicly after the selection of the new office bearer.
Agarkar's tenure will end on October 4
Ajit Agarkar had informed the BCCI on September 18 that he did not want to extend his tenure as the chief selector. His current contract expires on October 4. With this, his tenure as chairman of the senior selection committee of the Indian men's cricket team will also end.
Agarkar took over the responsibility of chief selector in July 2023. During his tenure, many big tournaments and selection related decisions came to the fore for the Indian cricket team. Now the board has the responsibility of appointing a new chief selector.
When will the name of the new Chief Selector be decided?
According to BCCI Secretary Devjit Saikia, the board will take a decision regarding the post falling vacant after October 4. This means that the name of the new chief selector is likely to be announced after the end of Agarkar's tenure. The board has indicated that there will be no haste regarding this post. During the 95th Annual General Meeting of BCCI, the office bearers were authorized to take decisions related to the Senior Selection Committee.
In media reports regarding the name of the new selector, the names of some former Indian cricketers have emerged as possible contenders, but the BCCI has not yet officially announced anyone as the new chief selector. Therefore, the final name will be confirmed only after the official announcement of the board.
