Aamir Khan to receive Screen Icon Award in Singapore

Bollywood actor Aamir Khan is set to receive the Screen Icon Award at the 37th Singapore International Film Festival in recognition of his contribution to Asian cinema.

Khan is also scheduled to reunite with filmmaker Ashutosh Gowariker for a special screening of their acclaimed film Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India, marking the movie’s 25th anniversary.

The actor will take part in the festival’s “In Conversation With” programme, where he is expected to reflect on his career and the impact of Lagaan.

The Singapore International Film Festival is scheduled to run from October 21 to November 1, with this year’s edition taking place earlier than its usual dates.

Released in 2001, Lagaan starred Khan as Bhuvan, a villager who challenges the British colonial authorities to a cricket match to save his community from a heavy tax.

Directed by Gowariker, the film combined historical drama, sport and music and went on to receive international recognition.

Lagaan was selected as India’s official entry for the Academy Awards and received a nomination for Best Foreign Language Film at the 74th Academy Awards.

The anniversary screening will revisit the film 25 years after its release and celebrate its lasting place in Indian cinema.

Khan previously reflected on the film’s journey during a screening at the London Indian Film Festival in July. He said the team had made Lagaan with passion and belief without anticipating the lasting response it would receive from audiences.

The Singapore festival appearance will bring Khan and Gowariker together again as they celebrate one of their most recognised collaborations.
