Jürgen Klopp will be looking to secure his first victory as Germany head coach when his side face Greece in their UEFA Nations League Group A2 encounter on Sunday, September 27.
Klopp began his Germany tenure with a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands in Amsterdam. Germany appeared on course for a winning start after Felix Nmecha put them ahead, but Cody Gakpo struck in stoppage time to earn the Dutch side a share of the points.
The Germany boss will have to make changes against Greece after injuries ruled Jamal Musiala and Kai Havertz out of the upcoming fixture. Florian Wirtz and Eintracht Frankfurt forward Jonathan Burkardt have been brought into the squad, giving Klopp additional attacking options.
Greece will arrive in Augsburg with confidence after opening their Nations League campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory over Serbia in Belgrade. Christos Tzolis cancelled out Serbia’s early advantage before substitute Anastasios Douvikas scored deep into stoppage time to complete the comeback.
The upcoming fixture also carries an interesting history between the two nations. Germany and Greece last met in June 2024, in a friendly played shortly before the European Championship. Greece went ahead in the first half through Giorgos Masouras, but Kai Havertz equalised after the break before Pascal Groß scored the decisive goal in the 89th minute to give Germany a 2-1 win.
Their last competitive meeting came in the Euro 2012 quarter-finals. Germany produced a 4-2 victory in Gdansk, with Philipp Lahm, Sami Khedira, Miroslav Klose and Marco Reus finding the net for the Germans.
Germany have also never lost to Greece in their 10 previous meetings. The head-to-head record currently stands at seven Germany wins and three draws, according to the German Football Association’s data centre.
With Greece already having three points and Germany searching for their first Nations League win under Klopp, Sunday’s meeting in Augsburg promises to be an important early test for the new Germany coach.
