Ukraine is intensifying efforts to increase the use of robots in the war against Russia. Former Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov has announced a new initiative called Army of Robots. Its objective is to create such machines that can perform the most dangerous tasks on the battlefield. According to the Kyiv Independent, Fedorov announced this on September 26. He described it as a defense-tech ecosystem that will help in the development, testing and deployment of robotic systems for military use.
The initiative aims to build on Ukraine's experience with drones and extend unmanned warfare from sky to ground. Fedorov said the initiative will focus on developing technology that can protect soldiers from danger. Robot reconnaissance missions can accomplish missions such as delivering ammunition, evacuating wounded soldiers, laying and removing mines, defending bases, and conducting attacks.
He said that the objective is to create a system in which machines can be sent to those areas where there is more danger in sending human soldiers. This marks another step toward unmanned systems in Ukraine's battlefield strategy. The initiative is based on the model of Ukraine's Army of Drones, which helped accelerate the development and deployment of unmanned aerial systems following Russia's major offensive.
The growing importance of robots on the battlefield is driven by the need to keep soldiers away from increasingly dangerous frontline areas. Ukraine's Defense Ministry says ground robotic systems are being used for logistics, ammunition delivery, evacuation of wounded soldiers and other operations without sending personnel directly into attack areas. The US Army is also increasing the use of systems that run without human help. He says that with these, the lethality of the attack can be increased while reducing the danger to the soldiers.
