Bukavu. A major boat accident occurred in eastern Congo on Sunday. According to officials, a boat carrying traders capsized in Lake Kivu on Saturday night. At least 12 people died in the accident, while many people are still reported missing.
According to Felix Habiragi, chief of Kiskehe village, more than 50 people were on board the boat. The accident occurred in the Idjvi region of South Kivu province. After the accident, relief and rescue operations were started in the area. The local official said that after the accident, about 15 people have been evacuated safely. However, the death toll is expected to increase due to a large number of people going missing.
Officials said that there was no immediate information available as to what caused the boat to capsize. The accident is being investigated. There have been boat accidents in Lake Kivu before, raising questions about overcrowding and safety arrangements.
