New Delhi. Taking suo motu cognizance of the recent rape incidents in Delhi-NCR, the Supreme Court has expressed concern about the safety of women. On the case of gang rape of a minor girl in Delhi's Aastha Kunj area and sexual exploitation of a minor student in a moving sleeper bus, the apex court said that looking at these incidents, painful similarities with the Nirbhaya incident of 2012 emerge. The Supreme Court bench headed by Justice JB Pardiwala said that these incidents of rape are a failure of the law enforcement agencies and it is necessary to fix accountability of those responsible.
The bench said that it is the responsibility of the administration to ensure the safety of citizens, especially women and children, in public places. Public places like parks and buses cannot be allowed to become 'dangerous places' due to inadequate lighting, poor surveillance systems and lack of other administrative facilities. The apex court has also directed to register a suo motu case. Let us tell you that a case of gang rape of a minor girl has come to light in Aastha Kunj area of Delhi. Three people gang-raped the girl. However, the police have arrested all three accused and the accused are currently in judicial custody.
Earlier on August 4, a 16-year-old minor girl from Mainpuri, who had boarded a sleeper bus from Pari Chowk in Greater Noida to Noida 63, was raped by the conductor and driver. Later, the accused absconded after dropping the victim from the bus on Ring Road near Kashmiri Gate in Delhi. After the complaint of the victim, the police identified the bus with the help of CCTV cameras and arrested the accused driver and conductor.
