Minecraft Dungeons II Opens the Door to Minecraft’s First New Dimension in 14 Years

Minecraft Dungeons II arrives on September 29, showcasing more than the traditional boundaries of a dungeon-crawler sequel.

Rather than merely offering an expanded roster of missions, the release grants players a pioneering preview of The Sift – Minecraft’s first new realm in over 14 years.

Mojang Studios has confirmed that this enigmatic fourth dimension will also come to Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition in 2027, although Mojang has not yet detailed how that version will differ from its Dungeons II appearance, turning an ordinary spin-off launch into a momentous milestone in the franchise’s history.

The Sift Arrives First in Dungeons II

Players enter the Sift through rifts that open in the interconnected world of Minecraft Dungeons II. Mojang describes the dimension as vibrant and filled with souls, new biomes, unique mobs, and shifting rules that affect exploration and combat.

Two biomes, Meadows and Carapace, have already been named, whereas others remain for players to discover.

The Sift will become Minecraft’s first new dimension in over 14 years once it reaches the main game. Dungeons II will be the first released game where players can explore the Sift before it comes to Minecraft in 2027.

How the World Structure Changes from the Original

Unlike the first game, where users can pick isolated missions off a tactical camp table, Minecraft Dungeons II avoids clearing a stage and retreating to base.

In its place is a world stitched together without seams, where settlements, structures, caves, forgotten ruins, narrative events, and main and side quests share large, interconnected regions. The sequel replaces the first game’s isolated mission structure with large interconnected regions.

Exploration has a larger role because quests, settlements, and points of interest now sit within interconnected regions.

Jumping, Gear, and Enchanting Expand Player Choice

Verticality reframes the whole experience now that heroes can finally jump, folding movement into exploration and combat alike.

Jump attacks join the classic dodge roll, and with them come alternate traversal paths and tactical angles that the original game never offered. Character customization gets a comparably massive upgrade, with gear slots doubling from six to twelve.

Armor is now split into helmet, chestplate, leggings, and boots that can be equipped independently. Projectile weapons now have unlimited ammunition that recharges automatically over time.

Three dedicated talisman slots sit within this expanded layout, each carrying unique passive bonuses, which opens the door to remarkably precise and tailored playstyles. Enchanting now uses collectible enchantment books stored in a personal library, letting players apply chosen effects through the Enchantsmith rather than relying entirely on enchantments attached to dropped gear.

Co-op Returns with Familiar Limits

Four-player local and online co-op is confirmed.

Cross-play and mixed local-online sessions are supported. Players who preferred the original’s co-op focus will find the same maximum group size.

Matchmaking tools have been added to make joining others easier.

Platforms and Availability

Minecraft Dungeons II launches on September 29 for Xbox Series X|S, Windows (Microsoft Store and Steam), PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2. It arrives day one on XGame Pass Ultimate and PC Game Pass. Xbox Play Anywhere is also supported.

Pre-order bonuses include two hero skins, Twisted cape, Twisted Chicken pet. Offer ends 28 September (12 PM PDT, may vary by region/platform).

World structure departs sharply from the original. Isolated missions picked from a camp table are gone, replaced by interconnected regions that change how players move through the game.

Dungeons II introduces the Sift, a newly created Minecraft dimension, while the original Dungeons and its DLC already explored existing Minecraft dimensions, including the Nether and the End.

Final Thoughts

Minecraft Dungeons II modernizes the dungeon-crawler formula with an interconnected world, jumping, and deeper build options. At the same time, it serves as the first public doorway into the Sift, which Mojang has confirmed will come to Minecraft Java & Bedrock Edition in 2027.

Whether the sequel stands strongly on its own or mainly functions as an early look at the Sift will become clearer once players spend time with it after September 29.
