Business News : From 1 October 2026, rail passengers will see a major change in ticket checking. Central Railway will run a special ticket checking campaign from 1 October to 31 October 2026. During this period, ticket checking on trains and stations will be stricter than before. Special attention will be given to tickets purchased at concessional rates, tickets booked under reservation quota and passengers traveling on pass or PTO.
Passengers should carry the identity card along with the ticket
During this campaign, passengers will be required to carry their original ID along with their tickets. Failure to present the required credentials during checking may raise questions about the validity of the ticket. If more than one person is traveling on the same ticket, at least one passenger will be required to have valid identification at the time of checking. Failure to produce identification may result in all passengers traveling on that ticket being treated as not having a valid ticket. In such cases, penalty or other action may be taken under Railway Rules.
Special attention to concessional rates and reservation quota holders
Railways will also check passengers traveling at concessional rates and using the prescribed reservation quota. This will ensure that the passenger is indeed eligible for the concession or quota. This means, simply presenting a ticket may not be enough. If required, passengers will also need to show identification documents to verify that the ticket has been booked for the right person.
ID is also required for pass and PTO holders
Railway employees and their family members often use travel facilities like e-pass and PTO. E-Pass provides free travel to eligible persons, while PTO can be used to avail tickets at reduced fares.
Action will be taken against the passenger for traveling without a valid ticket
From 1st October, such passengers will also need to carry their original ID proof during their journey. Further, before travelling, it will be necessary to verify that the e-pass or PTO has been properly converted into “right to travel”. If the required procedures are not completed or a valid ID is not shown, the passenger may be prosecuted under the rules for traveling without a valid ticket.
Reserved tickets will also be checked
This campaign of Central Railway will not be limited to reserved ticket or concession passengers only. Unreserved tickets will also be checked. If the checking staff is in doubt about the ticket, they can check the ticket information on the spot through the TTE app. This is intended to prevent the use of counterfeit or altered tickets and the misuse of reservation, concession or pass benefits.
What should passengers do?
From 1st October travelers are required to carry their original ID proof with their ticket. If you are traveling using concession, reservation quota, e-pass or PTO, check the relevant documents and travel permit in advance. Ticket checks may be stricter on Central Railway trains and stations during the month of October. Therefore, it would be better to check both the ticket and the ID before starting the journey.
