Washington. US President Donald Trump has taken a major administrative decision regarding Artificial Intelligence (AI). Trump has signed an executive order directing the use of the terms 'Super Intelligence' and 'SI' in place of 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in the functioning of the federal government. The Trump administration says that the capabilities of modern AI technology have gone far beyond the concept that was defined as 'Artificial Intelligence' nearly seven decades ago.
SI instead of AI in government work
Trump's executive order is titled 'Using the Era of Super Intelligence'. Under this, US federal departments and agencies will have to use 'Super Intelligence' and the abbreviation 'SI' in official correspondence, public communications, websites, reports and documents related to administrative policy.
The order states that this change will be implemented to the maximum extent permitted by law. The government will not recognize the use of the terminology 'Artificial Intelligence' and 'AI' in relevant official places. However, already existing government records will not be covered under this change. Old rules, government contracts, grants and historical records will also not be changed due to this order.
What was the reason given for changing the name of AI?
According to the Trump administration, today's cutting-edge AI systems are not limited to simply imitating or automating parts of human intelligence. Their capabilities are constantly expanding and are helping to take human creativity and efficiency to new levels.
The executive order states that modern AI technology is making possible tasks that were previously thought impossible in science, medicine and almost every field of human endeavor. In such a situation, the administration believes that the increasing capabilities of technology should also be reflected in the official terminology.
At present only the definition of AI is applicable in the law.
Despite the name change, there is currently no separate statutory definition of 'super intelligence' in US law. For this, only the existing legal definition of Artificial Intelligence given in Title 15 of the US Code will be applicable.
The Assistant to the President for Science and Technology has been given a deadline of 60 days to present proposed legislation to Congress. It calls for setting a new federal statutory definition of 'Super Intelligence' and suggesting necessary changes in existing laws.
Order came after meeting with tech giants
Trump's executive order came after a high-level lunch meeting with tech giants at the White House. The meeting was attended by executives of many major tech companies including SpaceX and Tesla chief Elon Musk, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang.
Trump described AI and its related technological progress as a big opportunity for America. Describing this change as very important, he said that its impact can be bigger than the advent of the Internet.
