New Delhi: After E20 petrol, now the government's focus is on flex-fuel engines running on 100% ethanol. Road Transport Minister Nitin Gadkari has said that such engines are being developed which will run completely on ethanol (E100). Gadkari was speaking at an event after the inauguration of the new public bus service in Madhya Pradesh with Chief Minister Mohan Yadav.
Farmers will become 'energy givers'
Gadkari said, 'Today farmers are not only our food providers, but also our energy providers.' According to him, the increase in ethanol production has directly benefited farmers — maize prices have increased from around Rs 1,200 per quintal to Rs 2,600 per quintal. He said that this is the meaning of Swadeshi, self-reliance and independence.
Imports worth Rs 22 lakh crore will be curbed
Gadkari said that India currently imports petroleum worth about Rs 22 lakh crore. This dependence can be reduced by greater use of ethanol, electricity, hydrogen and other alternative energy sources. Vehicles equipped with flex-fuel technology will be introduced, which will reduce pollution without compromising on safety and will also reduce fuel imports.
EV also promoted
Along with ethanol, the government is also promoting the adoption of electric vehicles. Gadkari stressed on greater use of alternative fuels and clean public transport. Experts believe that flex-fuel engines can become a new big opportunity for the Indian auto industry.
