If today, on Friday, October 2, you are thinking of going to the bank branch and completing any important work like depositing a cheque, getting a draft made, KYC update or passbook printing, then stop. Today, as per the official holiday calendar of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), all the banks across the country have been completely closed in view of the sacred national festival of the birth anniversary of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi (Gandhi Jayanti).
Under the Gazette of India and the Negotiable Instruments Act (Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881), 2 October is included in the three mandatory national holidays in the country (26 January, 15 August and 2 October). This means that unlike regional holidays, banking branches remain closed on Gandhi Jayanti, not in any one or two states of the country, but in all 28 states and 8 union territories from North to South and East to West.
As per the instructions issued by RBI, there will be no in-branch (branch level) work today.
-
Government Bank: All 12 public sector banks including State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank and Union Bank of India are closed today.
-
private bank: All branches of HDFC Bank, ICICI Bank, Axis Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank and Yes Bank will remain closed.
-
Rural and Co-operative Banks: All Regional Rural Banks (RRBs), District Central Cooperative Banks and Urban Cooperative Banks are also on holiday today.
-
Foreign and Small Finance Banks: There will also be no physical functioning in the branches of Standard Chartered, Citibank, AU Small Finance Bank and Suryoday Bank.
The closure of bank branches does not mean that your transactions will stop completely. In today's digital era, common citizens will not have to face any kind of hindrance in everyday financial transactions.
Since October 2 is a Friday, it has become a 3-day long weekend for banking employees as well as administrative offices in many states.
However, it is important for customers to note that Saturday, October 3 is not a second or fourth Saturday (the second Saturday of the month of October will fall on October 10, and the fourth Saturday will fall on October 24). Therefore, tomorrow, Saturday, October 3, all public and private banks will open normally as per their regular timetable. After this, there will be a weekly holiday on Sunday 4th October. Customers who have to go to the branch to complete their mandatory work can reach their nearest branch tomorrow morning.
Account holders from any city including Uttar Pradesh capital Lucknow, Kanpur, Varanasi, Gorakhpur, Delhi, Mumbai or Kolkata are advised to check the local holiday calendar of RBI before visiting the branch. The month of October is the month of festive season (Dussehra, Diwali, Chhath Puja), due to which in the coming days there will be many regional holidays in different states due to Durga Puja and Vijayadashami. In such a situation, do not postpone big payments and paper processes till the last date and use digital banking facilities as much as possible.
