New Delhi. Security arrangements have been tightened in the capital regarding the proposed demonstration against the Election Commission at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. Delhi Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) President Saurabh Bhardwaj has been detained by the police among the people gathering for the demonstration. Earlier, Delhi Police had informed that permission for the demonstration was not being given. In view of the demonstration, prohibitory orders have been imposed in New Delhi district. Additional police and Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed along with barricading in Jantar Mantar and surrounding areas.
What did Saurabh Bhardwaj say before being detained?
Saurabh Bhardwaj before being taken into custody by the police (Saurabh Bhardwaj) claimed deployment of police outside his residence and the houses of other leaders. He appealed to the youth to reach Jantar Mantar and express their views peacefully. Bhardwaj said that he has reached Jantar Mantar by metro without any vehicle and other people can also reach the protest site in the same way.
Tight security arrangements around Jantar Mantar
In view of the proposed demonstration, security has been increased in sensitive areas of Jantar Mantar and New Delhi district. Additional personnel of Delhi Police and Central Armed Police Forces have been deployed. Movement is being controlled by placing barricades on the roads. Delhi Police has said that permission will not be given for the demonstration. According to officials, precautionary measures have been taken to maintain security and law and order.
Section 163 of BNSS implemented in New Delhi district
In view of the protests at Jantar Mantar, prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Indian Civil Security Code (BNSS) are in force in New Delhi district. Public meetings, processions, demonstrations, protests and sloganeering without prior written permission have been banned. Police have also installed barricades on the major roads leading to Jantar Mantar. People have been advised to check traffic and safety updates before visiting the affected areas.
Entry-exit closed at 11 metro stations
Due to security arrangements, entry and exit at 11 stations of Delhi Metro has been closed till further notice. in these Janpath, Patel Chowk, Central Secretariat, Rajiv Chowk, Seva Teerth, Mandi House, Lok Kalyan Marg, INA, Chawri Bazaar, Ramakrishna Ashram Marg and New Delhi. However, for the convenience of passengers Rajiv Chowk, Mandi House, New Delhi and Central Secretariat Interchange facility continues at the stations. That means passengers can change metro lines at these stations, but will not be able to enter or exit from there.
Traffic also affected in Central Delhi
With security arrangements, traffic is being controlled and diverted on many major routes of Central Delhi. Commuters on Jantar Mantar Road, Connaught Place, Tolstoy Marg, Parliament Street and surrounding areas have been advised to allow extra time and take alternative routes.
Demonstration regarding SIR and Election Commission
The issue of performance pertains to the functioning of the Election Commission and the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. Demands have also been raised by the organizers of the protest regarding Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Delhi Police has not given permission to the proposed demonstration.
