US Sends Third Aircraft Carrier and About 9,000 Troops Toward Middle East/ TezzBuzz/ WASHINGTON/ J. Mansour/ The United States is sending roughly 9,000 sailors and Marines toward the Middle East, including a third aircraft carrier, as President Donald Trump considers additional strikes against Iran. Trump also suggested an Iranian connection to the FlyDubai cockpit attack without providing evidence and threatened retaliation if a link is established. Deep Look
US Expands Naval Deployment to Middle East
WASHINGTON — The U.S. military is dispatching roughly 9,000 additional personnel aboard warships headed to the Middle East, a U.S. official said Thursday.
The movement includes an aircraft carrier strike group and an amphibious readiness group carrying more than 7,000 sailors and approximately 2,000 Marines.
The deployment comes as President Donald Trump considers further attacks against Iran, extending a conflict he initially said would last only weeks.
With the Nov. 3 midterms approaching, the buildup adds military options while raising questions about the war’s duration and political consequences.
Theodore Roosevelt Could Become Third Carrier in Region
The deploying force includes the USS Theodore Roosevelt carrier strike group, which recently sailed with the cruiser USS Chosin.
It also includes the USS Makin Island amphibious readiness group and its accompanying amphibious landing ships, the USS John P. Murtha and USS Anchorage.
A U.S. official said three aircraft carriers could be operating in the region as early as the end of October. The official spoke anonymously because the movements involve sensitive military operations.
Combined with forces already deployed, the arrival would bring the American naval presence to more than 20,000 sailors and Marines, supported by hundreds of aircraft.
Existing Forces Reflect Demands of Prolonged War
The USS George H.W. Bush and USS George Washington are already in the region, alongside the USS Boxer amphibious readiness group.
The George Washington normally operates in the Pacific but was redirected to replace the USS Abraham Lincoln.
The Lincoln’s demanding deployment kept its crew at sea for more than 260 consecutive days.
The Navy previously concentrated three carrier strike groups in the Middle East in April, its first such deployment since 2003.
Trump Suggests Iran Link to FlyDubai Attack Without Details
Trump said Thursday that information reaching him suggested a connection between Iran and the FlyDubai copilot accused of stabbing his captain and attempting to crash an Israel-bound aircraft.
“I would say the answer, based on what I’m hearing, is ‘yes,’ but we’re working on it right now,” Trump said.
He provided no supporting details. An Iranian connection had not been established in the report.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu separately claimed in a Fox News interview that investigators believed the suspect had undergone “Islamist, radical indoctrination,” also without providing further details.
Trump said the United States would retaliate if an Iranian link were confirmed.
“Oh, they’ll be hit very hard, don’t worry,” Trump said. “You just ask them. They know what happened. They’ll be hit very hard.”
Additional Bombing After Midterms Remains Possible
In a Time magazine interview published Thursday, Trump said it was “possible” he would intensify bombing in Iran after the Nov. 3 elections.
Pressed about his plans, he declined to discuss potential targets.
“I can’t tell you that because look, you know, you’re asking, where are you going to bomb?” Trump said.
The comments left escalation open without announcing a specific timetable or operation.
Trump Says Latest Iranian Proposal Was Insufficient
Trump also explained his rejection of Iran’s latest ceasefire proposal.
In the interview, conducted Monday, he said “things that I wouldn’t have approved a year ago I wouldn’t have today.”
He cited an Iranian offer to “open up” the Strait of Hormuz but described the overall proposal as “not good enough.”
The waterway remains central to the conflict because of its importance to international energy shipments.
President Offers Mixed Assessment of Election Impact
Asked whether the unpopular war could damage Republicans’ prospects in November, Trump initially answered, “It’s possible.”
He then argued that preventing Iran from obtaining nuclear weapons could benefit his party.
“It should help, because Iran will not have a nuclear weapon,” he said.
Trump claimed that “100% of the people” opposed Iran having nuclear attack capabilities, “including worldwide.”
“So, when you say it that way, it would help,” he added. “If you don’t say that, it could hurt.”
His remarks acknowledged the political risk while presenting the administration’s nuclear objective as a potential campaign advantage.
Authorities Examine Possible Shift Toward Indirect Attacks
Authorities are concerned that Iran could increasingly turn to tactics outside conventional battlefield operations.
Those concerns follow the FlyDubai attack and a separate suspected plot involving a military air base in Britain. The alleged connections remain under investigation.
The developments come as American forces have made progress in reducing Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz and helping Gulf allies move oil to market.
At the same time, a U.S. naval blockade has been restricting Iran’s own oil exports.
British Arrests Follow RAF Fairford Security Incident
British authorities announced Thursday that they had arrested a 27-year-old dual British-Iranian citizen in central London on suspicion of planning a terrorist attack.
The arrest followed a security incident near RAF Fairford, an air base in England used by American bombers to strike Iran.
British authorities have linked the suspected plot to Tehran.
Five other men, all British nationals in their 20s from London, were arrested near the base early Sunday on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offenses.
Those five suspects have since been released on bail. The investigation remains ongoing, and the arrests do not establish guilt.
