Asian Games 2026: 20 historic achievements that defined India's campaign

India finished fourth with 85 medals at the 2026 Asian Games, matching its performance at the 2022 edition and leaving it short of the 107-medal tally achieved four years ago. Although the final medal count was slightly below the previous edition, the Aichi-Nagoya Games still delivered a historic chapter for Indian sport, with breakthroughs across traditional and burgeoning disciplines.

The absence of some events and missed opportunities in several disciplines kept India from crossing the 100-medal mark. However, the campaign was defined by a wave of historic firsts, long-awaited breakthroughs and the emergence of a new generation of athletes. India won its first-ever Asian Games medals in disciplines such as Mixed Martial Arts and Soft Tennis, while its shooters continued to rewrite records on the continental stage.

India's historic firsts and landmark achievements at Asian Games 2026

Perhaps the most eye-catching feature of India's campaign was the number of milestones achieved across a range of sports.

A total of 83 debutants were able to finish on the podium, showcasing the breadth of talent at the country's sporting system.

Some of India's biggest breakthrough moments also involved ending decades-old waits. The women's hockey team finally reclaimed Asian Games gold after 44 years and Sayan Barwal ended a 44-year wait for an Indian men's marathon medal outside the country. Mirabai Chanu's silver marked the end of a 28-year wait for an Indian weightlifting medal at the Games.

These are some of the most significant firsts and historic achievements from India's campaign:

First Asian Games medals in new disciplines

Suchika Tariyal – MMA: Tariyal won bronze in the women's Traditional -60kg category, giving India its first-ever Asian Games medal in Mixed Martial Arts.

Jay Meena – Soft Tennis: Meena claimed bronze in men's singles, securing India's maiden Asian Games medal in Soft Tennis.

Shooting produces more historic milestones

Shooting once again emerged as one of India's most productive disciplines as a number of athletes created history.

Maheshwari Chauhan, Parinaaz Dhaliwal and Raiza Dhillon won bronze in the women's skeet team event, earning India its first-ever medal in the discipline at the Asian Games. Parinaaz Dhaliwal and Anantjeet Singh Naruka added another milestone by winning bronze in the skeet mixed team event, India's first-ever medal in that category.

Kamaljeet and Suruchi Inder Singh went a step further by winning gold in the 10m air pistol mixed team event, securing India's first-ever Asian Games gold in the discipline.

Kynan Chenai and Neeru also struck gold in the trap mixed team event with a score of 34/40, setting a new Asian record and giving India its first-ever gold medal in the event.

Archery breaks new ground

India's archers delivered another landmark campaign.

Ankita Bhakat, KumKum Anil Mohod and Kirti won gold in the women's recurve team event, securing India's first-ever Asian Games gold in the category.

Dhiraj Bommadevara and KumKum Anil Mohod then won silver in the recurve mixed team event, giving India its first-ever silver in the event.

Historic milestones across individual sports

Baranica Elangovan won bronze in women's pole vault, earning India's first-ever Asian Games medal in the event.

In boxing, Lovlina Borgohain won gold in the women's 75kg category, giving India its first Asian Games gold in the weight class. Parveen also claimed gold in women's 65kg, becoming only the third Indian female boxer to win an Asian Games gold medal.

India's boxing contingent finished up with three gold and three bronze medals, making the 2026 edition the country's most successful Asian Games boxing campaign in terms of gold medals won.

Naorem Roshibina Devi won silver in women's Sanda 60kg, becoming the first Indian athlete to win three consecutive Asian Games medals in Wushu.

The wrestling contingent also delivered a number of significant milestones.

Sunil Kumar won bronze in men's 87kg Greco-Roman, becoming the first Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to secure podium finishes at two consecutive Asian Games.

Nitesh Kumar went one step further by winning silver in men's 97kg Greco-Roman. He became only the second Indian Greco-Roman wrestler to reach an Asian Games final, ending a 64-year wait since Maruti Mane's silver in 1962.

In weightlifting, Mirabai Chanu won silver in the women's 49kg category. It was her first Asian Games medal and ended India's 28-year wait for a medal in the sport.

Athletics, hockey and cricket create their own history

India's women's hockey team also delivered one of the most emotional moments of the Games by winning gold, ending a 44-year wait for the Asian Games title after India's previous triumph in 1982.

Cricket produced its own set of landmark moments. Shafali Verma became the first Indian woman to score a century at the Asian Games, while her 100 also became the first century in the history of women's cricket at the Games.

Smriti Mandhana added another milestone by becoming the first woman cricketer to complete 11,000 international runs during the tournament.

In table tennis, Manush Shah and Diya Chitale won bronze in mixed doubles. The medal was India's fourth in Asian Games table tennis history and only its second in the mixed doubles category.

A campaign defined by the next generation

India may have finished the 2026 Asian Games with a lower medal tally than in 2022, but the breadth of its achievements gave a more significant takeaway. From MMA and Soft Tennis through to shooting, archery, wrestling, boxing, hockey and cricket, Indian athletes repeatedly broke new ground.

The presence of 83 debutants on the podium was perhaps the clearest indicator of the country's burgeoning talent. Aside established names and veterans, these emerging athletes ensured India's sporting footprint was widening.

The 85-medal haul may not tell the whole story of Aichi-Nagoya. The first medals, first golds, record-breaking performances and the end of decades-long droughts are testament to the fact that Indian sport is becoming more and more diverse – and difficult to overlook in Asia.
