Kennedy Center Honors Move to Downtown Washington Arena

The Kennedy Center Honors will be held at Capital One Arena this year, moving the annual celebration away from the institution’s Potomac River venue.

A Kennedy Center spokesperson confirmed Friday that the 49th ceremony will take place at the downtown Washington arena on Dec. 7.

Few additional details were available, and the spokesperson did not explain why the location changed.

The recipients of this year’s honors will be announced later.

Venue Change Comes Amid Closure and Naming Dispute

The announcement follows the board’s decision last month to close the Kennedy Center after a federal judge blocked efforts to restore President Donald Trump’s name to the building.

Trump has said the facility needs safety repairs.

However, he has also said those repairs would proceed only if the board could move forward with adding his name.

Congress has allocated $257 million for repairs, while a federal judge has twice ruled that the proposed name change requires congressional approval.

Trump Promoted Renaming After Hosting 2025 Honors

Trump hosted last year’s ceremony, whose honorees included Sylvester Stallone and George Strait.

At the time, he said he would rename the facility the “Trump Kennedy Center.”

Workers subsequently began adding his name to the building.

The Trump-appointed board of trustees unanimously approved the change, which has since faced legal challenges.

Federal Law Protects Kennedy Memorial’s Identity

Congress designated the performing arts center as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy in 1964, the year after his assassination.

The governing law explicitly bars the trustees from turning the center into a memorial to another person or placing another person’s name on its exterior.

Those restrictions are central to the dispute over the board’s renaming effort.

Annual Honors Recognize Lifetime Artistic Contributions

Established in 1978, the Kennedy Center Honors celebrate lifetime contributions to American culture through the performing arts.

The ceremony will continue this year at the arena while the institution’s building and naming disputes remain unresolved.
