Spoiler alert: This article contains major spoilers for Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1, also known as Episode 171, “The Battle Begins.”
After more than five years away from television, Black Clover is finally back. Season 2 picks up the story from the Spade Kingdom conflict, with the Magic Knights preparing to rescue Yami Sukehiro and William Vangeance from the Dark Triad. But the premiere does not immediately throw Asta into the main battle.
Instead, Episode 1 spends much of its runtime showing Asta and Liebe’s struggle to master their Devil Union, while Yuno prepares for another confrontation with Zenon. At the same time, the Spade Kingdom’s plans move forward, pushing the long-awaited war closer to its breaking point. So, what exactly happens in Black Clover Season 2 Episode 1 and what does the ending mean for Asta, Yuno and the Magic Knights?
What Happens To Asta And Liebe In Episode 1?
The episode begins with Asta continuing his training under Nacht Faust. After completing the Devil-Binding Ritual with Liebe, Asta needs to take the next step: mastering Devil Unionthe form that allows him to draw much more directly on Liebe’s Anti-Magic power.
The problem is that Asta and Liebe still cannot properly synchronize. Nacht pushes Asta through an intense training session, using his own devil powers and shadow magic to force Asta to understand what Devil Union actually requires. Asta does eventually manage to enter the form.
However, there is a catch. The transformation lasts only for a very short time before breaking down. Liebe’s power is also limited, meaning Asta cannot simply activate the Devil Union and maintain it indefinitely. That makes the episode’s first major development important: Asta has not fully mastered Devil Union yet. The door has opened, but he still needs to learn how to keep the transformation active long enough to use it against the Dark Triad.
Why Does Nacht Leave Asta Behind?
Nacht is preparing to join the Magic Knights’ operation in the Spade Kingdom. Asta, however, is not ready to go with him. Nacht makes it clear that Asta still needs to complete his Devil Union training. He ultimately leaves Asta behind with Gimodelo while the rest of the operation moves forward.
Asta refuses to give up. His goal remains the same: master his Anti-Magic and join the others in the fight. This creates one of the episode’s biggest tensions. The Magic Knights are heading into enemy territory while Asta, arguably their most important weapon against the devils, is still training.
What Is Yuno Doing In Episode 1?
While Asta is training with Nacht, Yuno is preparing for his own rematch. Yuno previously suffered a major defeat against Zenon Zogratisone of the Dark Triad members. That defeat also left William Vangeance in the hands of the enemy.
Now Yuno is training with Langris Vaude, working on his abilities and preparing for the confrontation that awaits him. The objective is clear: Yuno wants to defeat Zenon and help rescue William. Unlike Asta, Yuno is already moving with the Magic Knights toward the Spade Kingdom. That parallel is important. Both rivals are preparing for the same war, but they are entering it from very different positions.
Why Are Yami And William So Important To The Dark Triad?
The Dark Triad did not capture Yami and William simply to eliminate two powerful Magic Knight captains. Their powers are crucial to the Tree of Qliphoththe ritual that the Spade Kingdom forces are using to open a path to the underworld. That means rescuing Yami and William is effectively a race against time.
While the Clover Kingdom’s Magic Knights prepare their assault, the Dark Triad’s side continues working toward opening the gates to the underworld. The official episode synopsis confirms that Morris, the magic scholar from the Diamond Kingdom, is also working on the process in the Spade Kingdom.
What Is Happening Inside The Spade Kingdom?
The episode also shifts attention to the people resisting the Dark Triad. Members of the Spade resistance confront the regime despite knowing that they are heavily outmatched. Their resistance becomes important because Nacht has maintained connections with them from his time undercover in the Spade Kingdom.
The resistance agrees to create a diversion, giving the Magic Knights an opportunity to move against the Dark Triad. But the situation quickly becomes even more dangerous. An ancient demon emerges in the Spade Kingdom, creating another major threat for the resistance and the invading Magic Knights.
Who Saves The Resistance At The End?
This is where the episode delivers its biggest surprise. Just as the ancient demon appears to overwhelm the situation, Mereoleona Vermillion arrives. The former Crimson Lion captain immediately attacks the demon and makes it clear that she is not there merely to watch the resistance fight.
Her arrival changes the balance of the confrontation and provides the episode with its final major action beat.
Does Asta Unlock Devil Union In Episode 1?
Yes, but not completely. Asta and Liebe are able to activate Devil Union, but they cannot maintain the form for long. So it would be misleading to say that Asta has completely mastered the ability in Episode 1. The more important development is that Asta and Liebe have finally reached the point where the transformation is possible.
Now Asta has to learn how to control it, extend its duration and use it effectively against enemies who possess vastly greater devil powers. That is likely to become one of the major threads of the early episodes.
What Does The Ending Mean For Asta And Yuno?
The ending establishes that the Spade Kingdom Raid has finally begun. Yuno and the other Magic Knights are already moving toward the enemy, while Asta remains behind to finish his training. At the same time, the Dark Triad’s plan is progressing and the Tree of Qliphoth ritual is moving closer to its goal.
Mereoleona’s arrival shows that the Clover Kingdom is ready to fight on multiple fronts. But the biggest unresolved question is Asta. He has briefly reached Devil Union, but he still cannot control it properly. That means the next stage of his training is no longer just about becoming stronger. He needs to master the ability before the battle reaches its most dangerous stage.
What Could Happen Next In Black Clover Season 2?
Episode 1 essentially sets the board for the Spade Kingdom Raid. Yuno has a score to settle with Zenon. The Magic Knights need to rescue Yami and William. The resistance is fighting from inside the Spade Kingdom, and the Dark Triad is pushing ahead with the underworld ritual. And somewhere behind them all, Asta is still training with Liebe.
The official synopsis describes the episode as the beginning of the battle between the Clover Kingdom’s elite Magic Knights and the Dark Triad. After five years away, Black Clover has finally moved from preparation to war.
