Tezzbuzz Desk– The Supreme Court will today hear two cases related to the functioning of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. A bench of Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana will hear the cases.
It has been alleged in these petitions that some decisions were taken in the name of the Election Commission without the consent of the other two Election Commissioners. The petitioners claim that between October 2025 and August 2026, Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had filed objections on about 14 decisions related to SIR.
Rakesh Kumar Singh's petition demands that the Election Commission, being a multi-member body, cannot take decisions unilaterally. In the petition, an interim demand has also been made to suspend CEC Gyanesh Kumar till the final hearing. Also, a demand has been made to investigate the records of the commission.
The second petition has been filed by advocate Shailendra Mani Tripathi. It demands cancellation of 14 decisions allegedly taken unilaterally and setting up of an Independent Judicial Inquiry Commission or SIT headed by a retired Supreme Court judge. There is a demand to include cyber security and IT experts in the investigation.
The petition also demands forensic audit of ECINet and ERONet databases and investigation into the changes in the voter list during SIR. At the same time, the Election Commission says that it is normal to have different opinions during discussion in any institution and its orders are issued under prescribed legal procedures.
