Bengal Kolkata UCC : West Bengal is preparing to implement the Uniform Civil Code i.e. UCC in the next six months. Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari announced this during a program of Vishwa Hindu Parishad in Kolkata. He said that after Uttarakhand and Gujarat, West Bengal will be an important state to move towards implementation of UCC. Shubhendu Adhikari not only talked about UCC, but also announced strict laws against love jihad, land jihad and forced conversions.
Attacks on monasteries and temples will not be tolerated
During the program, Shubhendu Adhikari said that the government will work according to the rules of the constitution. However, attacks on Indian culture, tradition, monasteries and temples will not be tolerated under any circumstances. He said that any anti-national activity will not be allowed in West Bengal. He also appealed to the people to maintain unity and beware of divisive forces in the society.
Law against Love Jihad and Land Jihad
Shubhendu Adhikari said that apart from UCC, laws against love jihad and land jihad will also be introduced in the state. Strict legal provisions will also be made to prevent forced conversions.
He hinted that the entire process could be taken forward in the next six months.
Formation of High Level Committee for UCC
The West Bengal government has constituted a high-level committee headed by former Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to draft the UCC. The main objective of Uniform Civil Code is to bring uniformity in civil laws applicable to different communities. It includes issues like marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption.
VHP endorsed the announcement
Vishwa Hindu Parishad has endorsed the announcement of implementation of UCC in West Bengal. VHP says that every citizen can get equal legal rights after implementation of Uniform Civil Code. According to the organization, the UCC can benefit women in particular and help reduce legal disparities caused by different personal laws.
UCC was also included in BJP’s election promises
During the 2026 West Bengal assembly elections, the BJP made UCC one of its key election promises. Now the state government has announced to take action towards its implementation. Presently, Uniform Civil Code is in force in Goa for a long time. UCC is applicable in Uttarakhand from January 2025. In Gujarat too, the legislative process regarding UCC has been completed. Assam and Madhya Pradesh are also taking up the legislative process regarding UCC.
