US Air Force Returns RAF Fairford Bombers to American Bases
WASHINGTON — The U.S. Air Force has withdrawn all its bombers from RAF Fairford in England following an investigation into a suspected terror plot targeting the U.S.-run military facility.
A Pentagon official confirmed Sunday that the aircraft had been redeployed to their home bases in the United States. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss sensitive military movements.
RAF Fairford has served as a base for American bomber operations against Iran. Aviation monitoring groups, including the Military Air Tracking Alliance, have observed dozens of B-52 and B-1 bombers operating from the installation since the war’s opening days.
Observers reported seeing multiple B-1 bombers depart the base Sunday.
British Authorities Investigate Suspected Terror Plot
The withdrawal follows a security incident at RAF Fairford in late September and a subsequent British counterterrorism investigation.
A dual British-Iranian national was arrested in central London last week on suspicion of planning a terror attack. Investigators have taken six people into custody during the inquiry, with all subsequently released on bail.
British authorities have linked the incident to Tehran. Iran denies involvement, although it has previously stated that bases used to launch attacks against its territory are legitimate targets.
U.K. officials say Iran-linked proxies have carried out arson and other attacks in Britain and elsewhere. Many of those incidents have targeted Jewish communities and, according to officials, were intended to spread fear.
British authorities have also warned that Tehran could broaden its targets in the United Kingdom if Middle East conflicts continue.
Trump Weighs Further Military Action Against Iran
The bomber redeployment comes as President Donald Trump considers his next steps in the Iran war, including potential new strikes.
The conflict has continued beyond his initial assurances that the military campaign would last only weeks.
“We have decisions that I’ll make about Iran. Iran’s been decimated. So the only question is — it’ll either be the easy way, or the hard way,” Trump told reporters on Saturday as he left the White House for a rally in Ohio.
The aircraft’s return to the United States comes alongside continuing American military deployments toward the Middle East.
RAF Fairford Has Long Supported US Bomber Operations
Located about 100 miles, or 160 kilometers, west of London, RAF Fairford has supported American bomber missions during decades of Middle East conflicts.
Its role in the Iran war placed the installation at the center of both military operations and heightened security concerns.
The Pentagon official confirmed the aircraft movements but did not provide further details about the redeployment.
Additional US Naval Forces Head Toward Middle East
The United States continues to maintain a substantial military presence in the Middle East.
A U.S. official said Thursday that the recently deployed USS Theodore Roosevelt aircraft carrier and an amphibious readiness group were heading toward the region.
The ships together carry more than 7,000 sailors and 2,000 Marinesaccording to the report.
The official said the deployments could bring the number of American aircraft carriers operating in the region to three as early as the end of October.
