Bangkok’s 46-year-old park offered for sale at $300M as flood damages rides

Chaiwat Luangamornlert, the park’s founder and executive chairman, told the media recently that the park, also known as Siam Park City, was available for sale if anyone was interested in taking over the business, according to The Nation.

The facility was forced to shut down for around six months starting Sep. 26 as floodwaters submerged the entire water park and amusement park.

Chaiwat said on Oct. 1 that the flooding as the biggest crisis of his life. He estimated preliminary damage at no less than THB500 million.

Repairs and maintenance were expected to cost about THB300 million, while wages and employee support during the shutdown would total around THB100 million.

Other parts of the park also needed improvements, and at least THB500 million in funding would have to be secured for its recovery.

In an update on Oct. 3, Chaiwat said floodwater had rushed into the property within a single day. Without advance information, the park had no time to prepare or install flood protection measures.

He said he would try to accelerate restoration work so the park could reopen in about three months, compared with the earlier estimate of around six months, according to ThaiPBS.

Arrangements were underway to bring in engineers from the countries where the rides were manufactured to assess damage and verify their safety before operations could resume.

Chaiwat said the park’s future hinged on several factors, including government relief, support from financial institutions and the public’s response.

With operating expenses and employee wages still due, he could not confirm whether the business would be able to continue.

Opened in 1980, Siam Amazing Park is a Bangkok amusement and water park with more than 30 rides. Last year CEO Wuthichai Luangamornlert estimated that the park served 500,000 visitors after attendance fell 40–50% during the first seven months.
