More than 45 thousand houses in 167 villages will get clean drinking water from the water supply scheme, about 3 lakh people will get direct benefits.

Punjab News: Under the visionary leadership of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the Punjab Government is continuously expanding the scope of its efforts to provide clean and potable water to the people across the state. Under this commitment, Punjab Water Supply and Sanitation Minister Hardeep Singh Mundian inaugurated the canal-based multipurpose water supply scheme costing Rs 267 crore. This canal based project will ensure availability of clean and potable water to about 3 lakh people and more than 45,000 households in 167 villages in the border district of Amritsar.

The scheme is also an important step towards reducing dependence on groundwater and ensuring continuous supply of clean and safe drinking water through canal based water supply systems.

285.97 km long pipeline

Addressing the gathering after the launch of the project, the Cabinet Minister said that 39 MLD will be used to treat the canal water and make it potable. Capacity Water Treatment Plant has been established at Kandowali and Majjupura on Lahore Branch of Upper Bari Doab Canal. Apart from this, 285.97 km long pipeline is being laid and 20 water tanks are being built in the villages.

Supply of clean drinking water to villagers

He said Rs 266.95 crore would be spent on the project, which would cover 167 villages in Ajnala, Majitha, Harsha Chhina and Chaugawan blocks of the border areas. Under the scheme, 101 villages of Ajnala block, 56 of Harsha Chhina, 9 of Majitha and 1 of Chaugawan will be included. The canal water will be transported to the respective villages through pipeline network and through the scheme, clean drinking water supply will be provided to 2,85,994 villagers living in about 45,343 houses.

Hardeep Singh Mundian said that the main objective of this project is to provide canal based clean, pure and safe drinking water to the people by reducing the dependence on groundwater.

Clean and pure drinking water for the people of the state

Mundian said that this project will play an important role in providing clean drinking water to the rural people as well as reducing water-related health problems and improving the quality of life of the people. With the availability of canal water supply, villagers will get safe drinking water and a strong foundation will be laid for a healthy and better life. He said that the Punjab government led by Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann is committed to providing clean and pure drinking water to the people of the state.

Canal based multipurpose water supply scheme

On this occasion, MLA Ajnala Kuldeep Singh Dhaliwal thanked the Punjab Government for starting the canal based multipurpose water supply scheme. He said that with the commencement of this project, the people of the area will get clean and pure drinking water. He also thanked the Water Supply Minister and all the officials of the department for completing this project in record time.

Clean and pure water available to people

On this occasion, Administrative Secretary of Water Supply and Sanitation Department, Ramveer, while giving detailed information about this project, said that in some villages of this area, there is no TDS in ground water. And due to increasing amount of elements like arsenic, drinking water problem was arising in many villages. For this reason, this project has been started to provide clean and pure water to the people. He said that after the completion of the project, it will be maintained by the concerned agency for the next 10 years.

During the function, Talbir Singh Gill from Halka Majitha, Madam Sonia Mann from Halka Rajasansi, S.D.M. Ajnala Charumitra, Chief Engineer of Water Supply and Sanitation Department R.K. Khosla, Superintending Engineer Gurpreet Singh, Executive Engineer Sahil Anand, J.M.C. L.C.E. SPL (Kalpataru) GM of the company. Rajneesh, G.M. Darshan and other officials were also present.
