Avengers: Doomsday Gets ‘Heartbreaking’ Tease From Sebastian Stan, But There’s a Catch

MCU mainstay actor Sebastian Stan has teased that Avengers: Doomsday could be “heartbreaking” for fans. The film will mark Stan’s 10th appearance as Bucky Barnes in the franchise. He first played Bucky Barnes in 2011’s Captain America: The First Avenger. Stan’s character has already seemingly died once in the MCU, making the actor’s latest comments intriguing.

In a new interview with DeciderStan suggested that Doomsday could be an emotional experience for its characters. However, it should be noted that Stan also said that he hasn’t “seen the movie, and I don’t know how it turned out.”

“I’m sure it’s going to be probably heartbreaking, in a lot of ways. We’ll see who makes it to the next level,” he said.

Stan’s comments add intrigue to the status of many MCU superheroes moving from Avengers: Doomsday to Secret Wars. With so many heroes expected to converge in Doomsday alongside Doctor Doom, fans expect some of them to bite the bullet for good. Marvel Studios has shown it isn’t afraid of killing off beloved characters to amp up the dramatic stakes.

In 2018’s Avengers: Infinity War, Barnes was among the characters who disappeared after Thanos’ Snap. Barnes and the other victims of the Snap returned in Avengers: Endgame.

At the time of writing, Marvel Studios has not confirmed any casting for Avengers: Secret Wars. In fact, the studio has been tight-lipped about the plot for Doomsday. Several actors have publicly discussed their involvement, including Anthony Mackie, Robert Downey Jr., Simu Liu, Benedict Cumberbatch, and members of The Fantastic Four.

Most recently, Stan expressed an interest in playing the MCU’s new Captain America while jokingly taking a jab at Mackie. Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to release in theaters on December 18, 2026.
