New Delhi. After laying mobile network and fiber on the ground, Jio is now eyeing space. The company is working on a plan to lay a network of about 1,600 satellites across India and install 23 ground stations. Its purpose is to extend the network to those areas where ordinary mobile towers cannot reach. Jio has showcased its space vision at the ongoing India Mobile Congress 2026 in Delhi.

Jio has named this project 'Sovereign Satellite Connectivity'. It includes a network of about 1,600 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites. The aim of the company is to keep the control of the entire work from designing, engineering, testing to launching completely with India. The 23 ground stations included in the plan will play a very important role, which will connect the satellite network directly to the ground. Along with this, this satellite network will also be connected with Jio's existing mobile and fiber network.
Jio's target is to provide 100 percent coverage to the land and sea areas of the country, due to which the network will reach more than 6 lakh villages. Remote villages, islands and border areas are its main focus. Apart from this, it will be used in big companies, ships, flights, government and defense works as well as in emergency situations. Not only this, it has also been said to provide the facility of 'Direct-to-Device' calling directly on the phone to the villages.
This year the theme of India Mobile Congress is 'Scale Without Boundaries'. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10th edition of IMC on Thursday. This theme reflects the idea of taking technology out of its old limitations. Jio's satellite plan is putting this idea on the ground, that is, where the scope of cables and towers ends, the space network will start working from there.
