Mohit Sharma reveals how MS Dhoni shaped his cricket career

Chennai: Former India fast bowler Mohit Sharma has opened up about the influence of legendary captain MS Dhoni on his cricketing career, praising the veteran wicketkeeper-batter’s exceptional situational awareness, understanding of players and ability to make smart decisions under pressure.

Mohit, who played under Dhoni for both the Indian national team and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), said he was fortunate to have spent a significant part of his career under the former India captain. He credited Dhoni’s ability to recognise individual strengths and weaknesses and deploy players according to the demands of a match.

Speaking to ANI, Mohit described his experience of playing under Dhoni as wonderful and expressed gratitude for the role the former captain played in his development as a cricketer.

Mohit Sharma credits Dhoni for understanding players

Mohit said that working with the same captain over an extended period gave him an opportunity to benefit from Dhoni’s understanding of his game.

“It was a great experience playing under Mahi bhai. I was fortunate that for the majority of the cricket I played for India, Mahi bhai was the captain. When you spend a long time under a single captain, they understand your strengths and weaknesses, and they utilise you accordingly,” Mohit told ANI.

The former India pacer added that his association with Dhoni continued in franchise cricket, where both were part of the CSK setup.

He said the opportunity to play under Dhoni at both the international and franchise levels had a considerable impact on his career.

“He has had a massive impact on my career, and I carry deep gratitude in my heart for that,” Mohit added.

Dhoni’s leadership has been widely associated with his calm approach, tactical awareness and ability to manage players in different match situations. His experience across formats and his understanding of the game have made him one of India’s most celebrated cricket captains.

Situational awareness sets Dhoni apart

Asked what distinguished Dhoni from other captains, Mohit avoided making direct comparisons, explaining that every leader has a different approach to managing players and pursuing victories.

Instead, he highlighted Dhoni’s ability to assess match situations and identify multiple ways to solve a problem.

“Look, I believe every captain is unique. Singling one out often comes down to people associating it with results. Generally speaking, every individual is different; they manage their players in their own way. What set him apart, in my opinion, was his acute situational awareness. That awareness in him is extraordinary,” Mohit said.

He explained that while one person might identify a single solution to a challenge, another could find several ways to approach the same situation. According to Mohit, Dhoni was particularly effective at adapting his decisions to the circumstances.

“Often, you might have only one solution to a problem, but some people can come up with three different ways to handle the same question. With Mahi bhai, he acts very smartly according to the situation,” he said.

Mohit also emphasised that other captains possess their own strengths and methods of leadership. He said comparisons often overlook the fact that every captain ultimately shares the same objective: winning matches for the team.

His comments underline the importance of tactical flexibility in cricket, where captains must frequently make decisions based on changing match conditions, opposition strategies and the capabilities of individual players.

Dhoni’s record as India’s captain

Dhoni remains one of the most successful captains in Indian cricket history. He led India in 332 international matches across formats, recording 178 victories, and became the only Indian captain to win all three major ICC limited-overs trophies.

Under his leadership, India won the inaugural ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in 2007, the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup in 2011 and the ICC Champions Trophy in 2013.

The 2011 World Cup victory on home soil remains one of the defining moments of Dhoni’s international career. His unbeaten 91 in the final against Sri Lanka at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium helped India secure the title after a 28-year wait.

His leadership also coincided with India’s success in Test cricket, including a rise to the top of the ICC Test rankings.

Dhoni’s ability to remain composed during pressure situations, make calculated tactical changes and back players according to their roles became defining characteristics of his captaincy.

Mohit’s assessment reflects how those qualities can influence a bowler’s confidence and performance, particularly when captains understand how to deploy their resources in different match situations.

Mohit Sharma explains CSK’s winning culture

Beyond Dhoni’s individual leadership, Mohit credited CSK’s team environment for the franchise’s sustained success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Champions League T20.

The former pacer spent four to five years with CSK and said the organisation’s approach extended beyond performances on the field. He identified the team’s dressing-room atmosphere and emphasis on relationships as important factors behind its achievements.

“CSK is a huge brand, right? A massive brand, and that reflects in the brand of cricket they play. Many factors come together to build a great team. If I had to give the biggest credit, I would give it to the team environment,” he said.

Mohit explained that the franchise placed considerable importance on building a group of players and support staff who shared a common mindset and worked towards collective development.

He also praised the contribution of head coach Stephen Fleming, the management, physiotherapists, trainers and other members of the support staff.

“CSK’s focus has always been on creating a group where people are genuinely good human beings—where everyone shares a common mindset and works toward overall development,” Mohit said.

He added that one of the most positive aspects of his time at the franchise was the shared belief that success begins with establishing trust and harmony within the dressing room.

‘Win the dressing room before winning on the field’

Mohit described CSK’s approach as an effort to build a healthy team environment before focusing on results during matches.

“Having spent four to five years with CSK, the most positive aspect I noticed—whether you talk about Mahi bhai or the entire management staff, including Stephen Fleming, the physios, trainers, and everyone involved—was their shared philosophy: first win the dressing room, then go out and win on the field,” he said.

According to Mohit, creating a positive dressing-room atmosphere allows players to work together more effectively and contributes to sustained performances over a season.

He suggested that this emphasis on relationships and collective responsibility could help explain why CSK has remained competitive across multiple IPL seasons.

“Until you win the dressing room, you cannot build that winning environment,” he said, adding that maintaining a healthy atmosphere within the team had always been central to the franchise’s philosophy.

CSK have won five IPL titles, in 2010, 2011, 2018, 2021 and 2023, underlining the consistency of the franchise during Dhoni’s leadership era. The team has also won two Champions League T20 titles, in 2010 and 2014.

The franchise’s record reflects the combined contributions of players, coaches, management and support staff, alongside its emphasis on continuity and team culture.

Mohit’s career shaped by international and IPL experience

Mohit represented India in international cricket and developed a reputation as a pace bowler capable of delivering in different formats. His experience under Dhoni at both international and franchise levels gave him a close view of the former captain’s methods of managing players.

His reflections highlight two connected aspects of successful leadership: understanding individual players and creating an environment in which the entire team can perform effectively.

For Mohit, Dhoni’s influence extended beyond tactical decisions on the field. The former pacer also valued the way CSK’s management prioritised relationships, shared objectives and the overall well-being of the dressing room.

His account offers a glimpse into the leadership principles that helped shape one of Indian cricket’s most successful captaincy eras and contributed to CSK’s enduring reputation in franchise cricket.
