New Delhi: In the capital Delhi on Tuesday, opposition MPs of INDIA alliance took to the streets against the Election Commission. 'Save Democracy March' is being taken out from the Parliament to the Election Commission Headquarters amidst the resentment of the opposition parties regarding the special intensive revision of the SIR i.e. Voter List and the Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. In this march, about 150 MPs including Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge and Akhilesh Yadav are sitting on strike.
Foot march from Parliament to EC office
The INDIA coalition had announced this October 6 march after last month's meeting. Opposition MPs will leave from Makar Gate of Parliament and go to the Election Commission headquarters. The protest is part of the opposition's wider campaign over alleged irregularities in the SIR and voter lists.
Opposition parties say that transparency is necessary in matters related to the election process and voter list. At the same time, the opposition has also raised questions against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar regarding the functioning of the Election Commission and has demanded his removal from the post. These are the allegations of the opposition, on which the Election Commission has defended its process.
Many big leaders including Rahul and Akhilesh sat on strike
Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav also joined Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and party president Mallikarjun Kharge in the march. Opposition parties plan to present their demands before the Election Commission through this demonstration.
However, not all parties of the INDIA alliance are joining this march. Aam Aadmi Party has decided to distance itself from this demonstration. The party says that it is fighting its own battle on this issue. DMK has also informed that it will not participate in the march.
