Pedro Lopez Monster Of The Andes: Pedro López, considered one of the most dreaded and dangerous criminals in world crime history, is known as 'The Monster of the Andes'. This serial killer, who made more than 300 young girls and women his victims in Colombia, Peru and Ecuador, shocked humanity. He kidnapped hundreds of innocent people and subjected them to inhuman torture during the 1970s. But the most surprising and horrifying thing is that despite committing such gruesome and horrific crimes, he was released from jail in the year 1998, after which till date there is no trace of his whereabouts.
Who was Pedro Lopez and how did he start crime?
Pedro Lopez's childhood was spent in extreme torture and poverty. He started trying his hand in criminal activities from an early age. He made three countries of South America – Colombia, Peru and Ecuador – his hunting ground. He mainly targeted small girls and teenage girls roaming in poor settlements, bus stands and on the streets. He used to take them to isolated areas on the pretext of love or help and then crossed all limits of extreme cruelty with them. His fear can be gauged from the fact that he had confessed to more than 300 murders alone.
More than 300 murders, then released from 16 years of imprisonment
In 1980, Pedro López was caught red-handed by locals in Ecuador's Tungahuaria province when a potential victim escaped from his clutches and handed him over to the police. During interrogation, he made sensational revelations and gave the police maps of the places where he had buried hundreds of bodies. On his instructions, the police recovered dozens of skeletons and dead bodies. There was no provision for death penalty in Ecuador at that time and the maximum punishment was only 16 years of imprisonment. Due to this legal compulsion, he could not get a long life in prison.
Dreadnought disappeared after mental asylum
After completing his prison sentence, an Ecuadorian court declared him mentally unstable and he was sent to an asylum. After treatment for a few years, the doctors there declared him 'cured'. After this, in the year 1998, taking advantage of good behavior and legal loopholes, he was released from both jail and mental hospital. He was deported to Colombia, where local courts also did not issue any new warrants against him because his old cases were closed.
The law accepted the mistake, the mystery has not been solved till date
The acquittal of Pedro Lopez in 1998 is considered the biggest mistake of the world's criminal justice system. Shortly after his release he disappeared completely. Interpol issued a Red Corner Notice against him, but till date no one knows whether he is alive or dead. Some reports say that he was killed in Colombia itself, while some believe that he has changed his identity and is living at some secret place.
