Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha has emphasized the urgency of developing infrastructure and advanced healthcare services for the proposed medical college at Jolaibari in the South Tripura district, under the Pradhan Mantri Jan Vikas Karyakram (PMJVK).
A meeting was convened on October 10 in Conference Hall No. 2 of the State Secretariat to discuss plans for the medical college, which is to be established around the current Shantirbazar District Hospital.
During the meeting, CM Saha directed officials to prepare and submit the Detailed Project Report (DPR) promptly and initiate work on the project without delay.
Chief Minister’s Secretary Kiran Gitte presented a detailed visual report at the start of the meeting, outlining the medical college’s proposed plan, infrastructure needs, the present status of Shantirbazar District Hospital, and aspects of project implementation. After reviewing the proposal, the Chief Minister provided necessary guidance to the attending officials.
Saha highlighted that the medical college should form the basis for developing Jolaibari into a well-planned township. He stated that the initiative should extend beyond building the medical college and hospital, ensuring adequate facilities to foster a conducive academic environment and support students’ overall growth.
He recommended including facilities such as a yoga centre, auditorium, football ground and indoor badminton hall within the infrastructure plan and stressed the importance of providing proper amenities for students, doctors and staff members.
The Chief Minister underlined that the institution’s infrastructure must be modern, functional and scientifically designed. He insisted on equal emphasis on academic standards, quality medical services, hospital infrastructure, and patient facilities.
The meeting also addressed the expansion of healthcare services at Shantirbazar District Hospital. Saha emphasized that improvements to the existing hospital’s infrastructure and medical services should align with the plan for establishing the medical college.
Reiterating the need for thorough planning and coordination at each stage, the Chief Minister called on the departments and officials involved to expedite the preparation and submission of the DPR to enable subsequent project implementation steps.
Present at the meeting were Minister for Minority Welfare Shuklacharan Noatia, department Director Nirmal Adhikari, South Tripura District Magistrate, and senior officials from various departments.
