New Delhi. Delhi Police has approached the court to cancel the interim bail granted to Sharjeel Imam, accused in the 2020 Delhi riots. Delhi Police has filed an application in the court saying that while granting interim bail to Sharjeel Imam, a condition was imposed that he would not talk to the media. Police claim that a video has come of Sharjeel Imam talking to the media. Delhi Police has accused Sharjeel of violating the bail conditions.

Sharjeel Imam has been imprisoned in Tihar Jail for a long time in the Delhi riots case. Delhi court had granted interim bail to Sharjeel Imam from October 4 to 10 to attend the wedding of his cousin. After this Sharjeel Imam has to return to Tihar Jail again. Sharjeel Imam was granted interim bail earlier also. The court had earlier also imposed many conditions while granting bail to Sharjeel Imam. Recently, a bail application was filed in the Delhi High Court on behalf of Sharjeel Imam along with co-accused Umar Khalid, but the Delhi High Court had refused to grant bail citing an order of the Supreme Court.

The bail applications of Sharjeel and Umar Khalid have been canceled earlier also. The Supreme Court had barred Sharjeel and Umar Khalid from filing the bail application before one year. Sharjeel Imam is accused of calling for the isolation of Muslims by gathering them on the Siliguri Corridor (Chicken Neck) connecting the north-eastern part of the country. Sharjeel Imam's lawyer has declared this allegation false in the court. Whereas, the video of this inflammatory statement of Sharjeel went viral on social media. After which Delhi Police registered a case and made an arrest. Delhi Police has also imposed UAPA section on many including Sharjeel Imam and Umar Khalid.
