For Indian cricket, the flat, batter-friendly highway has always been their comfort blanket. It could be a bilateral series or a global event. India's staggering batting depth across formats has made it a sure-shot recipe for victory. Along with the world's best bowling attack, which comes into full swing when they have to defend a total, there is rarely any risk involved.
It is a comfort that has come to their aid in times of trouble. As recently as the 2026 T20 World Cup, India's Men in Blue had no problem picking up where they left off on a flat highway after their Super 8 encounter against South Africa, which saw them stutter on a difficult surface.
But in cricket, the scales tip both ways. While we have to concede India's frailty on sluggish, difficult pitches, there have been instances where their go-to comfort has been a nightmare. When their bowling attack failed to rise to the occasion, or dew rendered their spinners' wickets useless, their batting paradise has been the catalyst for some breathtaking record-chasing performances.
Here are five such encounters in which India found their paradise to be a purgatory.
1. IND vs WI (2nd T20I, Ranchi – October 9, 2026)
The JSCA International Stadium witnessed the birth of a T20 masterclass that will haunt Indian bowlers for years to come. Batting on the idyllic surface set in, India made an absolute mockery of the venue, posting up a gargantuan 249-5 thanks to big centuries from Sanju Samson, Shreyas Iyer, and Tilak Varma. When Mayank Yadav sent the West Indies packing back with a 5-2 scoreline early in their innings, the script appeared to be set.
Instead, a complete flat pitch and a heavy evening dew absolutely dismantled India's attack as Shai Hope and Sherfane Rutherford launched on a brutal counter-attacking stand before Romario Shepherd came in to tie the knot. The West Indies chased down the 250-run target with a nine-ball overhang in their power, giving India a painful lesson on a highway they had hoped would see them cruise to the series win.
2. IND vs WI (3rd ODI, New Chandigarh – October 2026)
Just days after their T20 exploits, the West Indies laid bare the limits of India's second-string bowling attack on yet another batsman-friendly surface. In the ODI series finale, India posted up a fearful total of 351-7 thanks to a strong opening stand between Rohit Sharma and Ruturaj Gaikwad, and a stupendous century from KL Rahul.
Unfortunately for India, the pitch at the PCA International Stadium was completely devoid of help for the bowlers as the evening drew in. Capitalizing on their record-breaking successes in the previous matches, the West Indies batsmen played with complete freedom. Shai Hope bludgeoned out a magnificent century to orchestrate the highest successful ODI chase against India to date, keeping them from the series whitewash just 10 balls short of a comprehensive win.
3. IND vs AUS (3rd T20I, Guwahati – November 2023)
An extremely slow-turning Barsapara Stadium track was lit up by the lights as India seemingly had their T20 series win sealed up when Ruturaj Gaikwad's stupendous maiden T20I century propelled them to a commanding 222-3. Australia needed a mountain to scale with a mere 43 runs to defend in the final two overs.
Even as India maintained their dominance, a thick coat of dew completely neutralized the spinners, like Axar Patel, turning them into soap. In walked Glenn Maxwell, who played the single greatest T20 knock of all time, smashing boundaries at will against a helpless attack to secure a miraculous last-ball win and keep the series alive.

4. IND vs NZ (4th T20I, Visakhapatnam – 2026)
Having already secured a home series win against New Zealand with matches to spare on the fairly reliable batting tracks, India expected nothing but another routine victory when they walked into Visakhapatnam. Instead, the Black Caps were able to flip the script after being asked to bat.
Devon Conway and Tim Seifert absolutely obliterated the bowling attack with a blistering 100-run opening stand to set the batters up for a towering 215-7. When India's chase faltered back at 9-2, the flat surface on which the match was played offered no miracle help. New Zealand's disciplined attack consistently struck the right gaps to bowl out the home team for a mere 165. Apart from a lone blazing 65 from 23 balls by Shivam Dube, India had no answers on the night the batting paradise was a favored visitor.
5. IND vs SA (2nd ODI, Raipur – December 2025)
The Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium laid out a classic batting beauty and India's famed batters happily cashed in, stroking two sublime centuries between Virat Kohli and Ruturaj Gaikwad. KL Rahul added yet another blistering unbeaten fifty to launch India well past the 350-mark to a formidable 362-6.
In response, the Proteas treated the enormous target they were facing like a piece of cake. Aiden Markram anchored the innings with a masterclass hundred at the top followed by smooth half-centuries from middle-order dynamos Matthew Breetzke and Dewald Brevis. A quickfire cameo by Corbin Bosch came in time to complete the highest-ever ODI run chase against India with four balls to spare, stunning the capacity crowd, and proving that flat tracks take both sides to play!
