Google to End Free Emergency Connectivity on Pixel Watch 2 and 3

Google is ending its Safety Signal service for LTE versions of the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3, removing a feature that allowed users to access essential emergency services without purchasing a separate mobile plan.

The change will take effect on December 12, 2026. Safety Signal was available to eligible Google Health Premium subscribers and provided cellular connectivity for safety features even when the watch was not connected to a smartphone or a standalone carrier plan.

Which Pixel Watch Models Are Affected?

The change applies specifically to the LTE versions of the Google Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3. Users of these models who rely on Safety Signal will need to arrange an alternative connection to continue accessing emergency features when away from their phones.

The announcement does not list the Wi-Fi versions of these watches among the affected models. Safety Signal was not available on the Wi-Fi variants.

Emergency SOS and Fall Detection Will Still Work

Google is not removing its core safety features from the affected watches. Emergency SOS, Fall Detection and Safety Check will continue to be available, but connectivity will determine whether users can access them.

After December 12, users will need one of the following connections:

  • An active mobile plan: An eligible cellular plan can allow the watch to connect independently when the user is away from their phone.
  • Bluetooth connection: When paired with a nearby smartphone, the watch can use the phone’s connectivity for supported safety functions.
  • Wi-Fi: Supported features can continue to work when the watch has an appropriate Wi-Fi connection.

Without a mobile plan, Wi-Fi connection or a nearby paired phone, users will lose the independent cellular access previously provided by Safety Signal.

Google to Notify Existing Users Before Shutdown

Google says existing Safety Signal users will receive advance notice through email and push notifications. A 30-day transition period will begin from the date of the email, during which users can continue accessing the service without a standalone carrier plan.

However, the service will stop working after December 12, 2026, even if users have not arranged an alternative connection.

What This Means for Pixel Watch Owners

The change could be particularly important for people who use their watches for running, walking, travelling or other activities where carrying a smartphone may be inconvenient. Safety Signal offered an additional layer of reassurance by providing cellular access for emergencies without requiring a separate mobile subscription.

Affected owners should check their watch model, review Google’s notification and consider whether a supported cellular plan is necessary for their needs. Emergency features depend on connectivity and are not guaranteed to work in every situation.

Summary

Google will discontinue Safety Signal on LTE versions of the Pixel Watch 2 and Pixel Watch 3 from December 12, 2026. Emergency SOS, Fall Detection and Safety Check will remain available through supported connections, including Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or an active cellular plan. Existing users will receive advance notifications and a 30-day transition period before the change takes effect.
