Mahindra Beats Tata Motors By Just 89 Cars: India’s No. 2 Carmaker Battle Is Getting Fiercer

Mahindra finished September as the country’s second-largest carmaker by retail registrations, but only just. FADA data shows Mahindra at 57,343 units and Tata at 57,254 units, a gap of only 89 cars.

That is a dramatic turnaround from August, when Tata registered 57,841 cars and Mahindra 50,245, leaving Mahindra 7,596 units behind. In September, Mahindra’s registrations jumped 14.13 percent month on month while Tata slipped 1.02 percent.

The result does not mean Mahindra has suddenly opened a meaningful lead. It shows the opposite. Second place has become a month-to-month fight in which a few hundred vehicles can change the ranking.

Mahindra’s September retail sales were also 38.93 percent higher than a year earlier, lifting its market share to 13.42 percent. Tata grew 28.66 percent year on year and finished with a 13.40 percent share.

That two-hundredths-of-a-percentage-point difference is about as close as a national sales battle can get.

Mahindra’s portfolio is almost entirely SUV-led. The Scorpio N and Scorpio Classic continue to deliver large volumes, while the Thar, XUV 3XO and XUV 7XO add scale across different price points. Mahindra has also been expanding its electric range with the BE 6 and XEV family.

The refreshed three-door Thar arrived in September, giving the brand another product trigger during the month.

Tata’s strength comes from having more body styles and powertrains. The Punch and Nexon remain major volume drivers, while the Sierra, Harrier, Safari, Tiago and Altroz widen the range. Tata also has petrol, diesel, CNG and EV products spread across several segments.

September matters because Tata had held second place through the previous several months. In May, Tata sold 59,090 vehicles against Mahindra’s 58,021, a gap of 1,069 units. In June, Tata’s lead widened slightly to 1,683 units, with 62,076 versus 60,393.

July remained close, with Tata at 62,611 and Mahindra at 60,048. August then appeared to give Tata breathing room as its retail registrations reached 57,841 while Mahindra fell to 50,245.

The figures also show why wholesale dispatch numbers and retail registrations should not be mixed. Manufacturer dispatches can be influenced by dealer stocking. FADA retail data reflects vehicles actually registered to customers, although Telangana registrations are not included in the dataset.

Hyundai registered 50,201 vehicles in September, giving it 11.75 percent market share. That puts both Mahindra and Tata more than 7,000 units ahead for the month. Hyundai grew 6.84 percent over August, but Mahindra’s sharper jump was enough to move past Tata and widen the gap over Hyundai at the same time.

Maruti remains in a different league at 1,69,132 September registrations and 39.59 percent share, so the immediate contest is not for first place.
