Delhi Police have registered an FIR against Congress MP and former Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) professor Angomcha Bimol Akoijam following allegations of sexual harassment involving students.
Filed at the Vasant Kunj North police station on Sunday, the case invokes relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on a complaint by the university’s chief security officer.
The investigation stems from complaints originally brought forward in May 2024 by at least 11 female students, who accused the then-professor of inappropriate behaviour and making obscene remarks. The university previously examined these claims via an internal committee under the POSH Act, which preceded his dismissal from his teaching post.
The unfolding legal development has triggered major political fallout. During a press conference, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj heavily criticised top Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi, for their silence on the matter, questioning the party’s commitment to women’s safety.
