The 4-day high-level official visit of Union Finance and Corporate Affairs Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to Singapore has successfully concluded. Held at a time of global financial uncertainty and geopolitical turmoil, the main objective of the visit was to connect international institutional investors with India’s rapidly growing economic landscape, improved regulatory framework and long-term investment opportunities. During the visit, the Finance Minister held bilateral meetings with Singapore’s top political leadership—President Tharman Shanmugaratnam and Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, as well as held a series of strategic meetings and investor roundtable sessions with the heads of Singapore’s sovereign wealth funds and the world’s largest financial institutions. These high-level discussions have clearly indicated that global investors are viewing India as the strongest and attractive ‘growth engine’ of the world economy.
During Singapore visit, Finance Minister held special one-on-one meetings with top leadership of the world’s largest wealth funds and investment banks:
-
Discussion on Long Term Capital with GIC: The Finance Minister met Lim Chow Kiat, CEO of Singapore’s Sovereign Wealth Fund ‘GIC’. During this, detailed discussions were held on sustainability of India’s economic growth, capital expenditure (Capex) and further increasing the participation of long-term institutional capital in infrastructure projects.
-
Brainstorming on infrastructure and private credit from Temasek: The meeting with the leadership of Temasek Holdings focused on promoting private credit to India’s key growth sectors and increasing investment in sustainable projects through the National Investment and Infrastructure Fund (NIIF).
-
Roundtable with JP Morgan and global bankers: The high-level roundtable with senior executives from JP Morgan, BlackRock and leading global financial institutions discussed the growing interest of foreign investors in India’s bond market and facilitating international capital flows. Investors appreciated India’s macroeconomic stability and fiscal discipline.
The Finance Minister outlined before foreign investors the key areas where India is expanding unprecedentedly in the coming years:
-
Semiconductor and Advanced Electronics: Information was given about the PLI schemes of the Central Government and strong supply chain mechanism for setting up semiconductor fabrication and assembly units in India.
-
Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Digital Infrastructure: The immense potential available to global funds in India’s vast data ecosystem, green data centers and new technology startups was highlighted.
-
GIFT City (GIFT IFSC) and NIIF: The International Financial Services Center (GIFT City) located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat was presented as an ideal financial gateway for global investors. Investors were given a direct invitation to invest capital through GIFT City under a tax-friendly and accessible mechanism.
-
Green Energy and Logistics Corridor: Favorable policies for foreign direct investment (FDI) in mega infrastructure projects like solar energy, green hydrogen, ports, expressways and dedicated freight corridors were shared.
Singapore has been the largest source of foreign direct investment (FDI) for India and the largest trading partner in the ASEAN region. The political and strategic consequences of this visit are also considered very important:
-
Expanding Comprehensive Strategic Partnership: Both countries agreed to replicate the successful models of bilateral trade, skilling and fintech connectivity (such as UPI and PayNow linkage) in other digital sectors.
-
Preparing for ASEAN 2027: The visit proved to be extremely important to strengthen India-ASEAN comprehensive economic cooperation ahead of Singapore assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship in 2027.
The positive response from international rating agencies and global fund managers clearly shows that India remains a safe and high-yield market in terms of FII and FDI inflows. This outreach of the Finance Ministry will not only ensure new inflow of capital into the country, but will also provide a strong support to the domestic stock market, Government Securities and manufacturing sector globally.
